Brock Jensen QB NDSU Dolphins UDFA

There are some small college specialists on a couple of draft forums I read. They weren't high on Jensen all year. Consequently I wasn't surprised he went undrafted. We signed some talented prospects but I suspect this guy is being overstated.

Its interesting you say this, because I'm a Bison fan and for whatever reason the impression was that this guy is a great college player but not a pro prospect. I guess I always assumed he didn't have the arm talent because everything else a guy needs he has in spades. When games got close he took over time and time again, And he gets more accurate during crunch time. I don't think anyone could say he is overated as a UDFA that is for sure.

Who is Brock Jensen, and why do the Packers seem so interested in him?

It has been a well-publicized fact that Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy wants to bring four quarterbacks to training camp. The team currently has three: Aaron Rodgers, Matt Flynn, and Scott Tolzien, all of whom started for the Green and Gold in 2013. The fourth will likely be a selection in May's NFL Draft. In recent weeks, several names have been connected to the Packers in the middle to late rounds of the draft, but one in particular - Brock Jensen - seems to be coming up more than most.

So who is this Brock Jensen guy and why didn't I hear of him before Draft season?

I'll answer the second part first. Jensen played his college ball at FCS North Dakota State, whose recent claim to fame is that they pulled an upset of Oklahoma in the NCAA Basketball tournament last month. However, the Bison's football program is an FCS powerhouse, losing only two games over the past three seasons and winning three straight FCS championships. Jensen started every game each of those three years, as well as seven of the team's 14 games his freshman year as well.

Oh, and he's a Waupaca, Wisconsin native, too.

Got some stats and measurements for me?

You bet. At his Pro Day, Jensen measured in at 6' 2-3/4" and 223 pounds, which is plenty good size for an NFL quarterback. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.70 seconds, as well. As for stats, here's a breakdown of his collegiate career:

Year Games Starts Comp Att Comp % Yds TD INT Rush Rush Yd YPC Rush TD
2010 9 7 59 131 45.0 950 7 2 68 231 3.4 4
2011 15 15 219 326 67.2 2524 14 4 79 173 2.2 9
2012 15 15 207 338 61.2 2331 17 8 111 357 3.2 12
2013 15 15 218 329 66.3 2793 34 7 99 479 4.8 10
Total 54 52 703 1124 62.5 8598 72 21 357 1240 3.5 35
Those are some impressive numbers, especially that TD/INT ratio in his senior year. Clearly, Jensen wasn't afraid to leave the pocket a bit either, and if you remove the sacks from his rushing yardage that part of his game would look even more desirable.

That's pretty great, sure, but that and his three championships were against FCS competition.

This is true, but NDSU has played (and beaten) FBS teams in Jensen's tenure, including some from power conferences. These aren't teams in weak conferences like the Sun Belt, either; they beat Minnesota (Big Ten) in 2011, Colorado State (Mountain West) in 2012, and Kansas State (Big XII) in 2013. While it's not like they went and beat Alabama, that should show that Jensen and NDSU were still capable of competing at a high level against good competition.

He definitely knows how to win games. I don't see us carrying four qb's on the roster, and Moore lilely is kept as the #2 QB behind Tanny, so I think Devlin and Jensen can battle it out for the #3 spot.

I don't know whether I qualify as a specialist or anything like that but I have been watching him all year and I have been very impressed. He's got great traditional tools as well as some untraditional ones. He regularly makes NFL throws but also has good feet. His intangibles are visible on tape. The worst I can say about him is that on a percentage of his throws he's about one beat late in delivering the football, which suggests he's a guy that needs to see it before he throws it. But you can probably say the same about Ryan Tannehill.

I had him as draftable. I had him above some of the other guys out there that people liked more. I have him as a better prospect than Pat Devlin was when he came out. Bottom line is he and Connor Shaw were two of the only late round to UDFA quarterbacks I had targeted as having positive enough risk-reward ratios to merit the investment of time and opportunity cost. I didn't have much interest in a lot of other guys. I toyed with Dustin Vaughan having similar risk-reward but in the end he was way later on a way higher percentage of his throws than Jensen.

I hope he comes in an beats Devlin out for the 3rd QB spot. I agree with what Chris says...the kid looks better than Devlin did coming out. I like how he takes over at the end of games and doesn't seem rattled. It will be hard though, to make the team, because our coach seems to really like Devlin....but we'll see how that competition unfolds.

Guy's a consistent winner who's actually beaten a few Div 1 opponents. Did we outhustle GB for him? Outside of the level of competition, he's seemingly got most of everything you'd want in a QB and was no doubt a primary catalyst in ND State's continued successes. Logical UFA signing; bracket that against Ireland who more likely would have signed John Skelton from Fordham as promising buried acorn.

The winningest quarterback in FCS history with three FCS National Championship rings and one Wisconsin State Championship ring happens to be 6'3" and 225 lbs with 4.70 speed and a 34 inch vertical, and also possesses pro level arm strength and accuracy.

Let's not overthink this. He was going to be on someone's roster this training camp. It might as well be Miami's.

He's bald.

It would make me incredibly happy to finally see devlin off this team, he's undersized, and has a weak arm.

No idea why we have spent so much freaking time and reps developing him, such a waste. Jensen is the perfect prospect to develop. Size. Athletism, arm, experience, and probably not the arrogant little punk Devlin was out of college.
