"Gus is a gunslinger," receiver Rod Smith said. "Trust me, I was in a game with him against San Diego (in 2000) when he almost threw for 500 yards and five TDs. He was in a groove man. When Gus gets in a groove man, he can tear a defense apart."

This is just a tid-bit on how the Broncos feel about Gus. Shanahan wanted Gus to come back to Denver this past offseason, but because there was a possibility of starting, Gus chose Miami.

I am not as worried about Frerotte as I am with the O-Line. I think that will be the contributing factor to his rise or demise (as in most cases in the NFL). I have to admit, I've not seen much on him except for the few games he started for Minny when Daunte' was out. He looked pretty sharp. Let's hope he can get in the "groove."

Gotta love Rod Smith, saying the smart comments rather that just saying Frerotte is a mediocre QB with ability to a certain degree but not enough to take a team anywhere over 8 wins.

Actually, didn't he replace Culpepper for only two games?

First game, he tore it up, from what I remember, 4 TD or something... perfect rating.

Second game... not so much. Had less than 200 yds passing 2 td's, 1 int, 1 fumble... Around 50% completion rating...

?!

The Second Game was against Denver ironically? Wasn't it?

So, Here is it, I found the stats:
He LIT UP, the San Francisco 49ers in Minnesota...
16 of 21 (76.2%) for 267yds, 4tds/0ints

He then proceeded to be so-so against the Falcons, in Atlanta...
14 of 24 (58.3%) for 239 yds, 2tds/0ints and 1 fumble.

The game Rod Smith is talking about was with the Broncos and he lit up some team for close to 400 yds and 4-5 tds...

I believe that the question is not: Can he have good games. I guess the question will be, how consitent can he be for the 'Phins. I'ld rather he not LITE up anyone but just play consistently well against everyone. Something our rivals in New England are enjoying quite some these past few years...

Thanks for the stats.
The 1st game was sweet.
Actually, I'd say the 2nd game was GOOD, not merely so-so. :)

GOOD - 58% completion %
GOOD - 239 yards (not lights-out, but good)
GOOD - 2 TDs (if QBs had 2 TDs every game, that'd be 32/year)
GOOD - 0 Ints
BAD - The 1 fumble is the ONLY negative.

I would take those stats against ATL all season long minus a few INT's...If Gus can put up 250 yds per game and 2 TD'S...We be good!...That's about what Roethlisberger did last year and look at their record...Of course we have to play great Defense and run the ball well....Mare has to have a great year...We need to eliminate the stupid penalties...And be above average on 3rd down and there's your recipe for success....And staying injury free wouldn't hurt.

I actually made a typo... in the second game, he did have an INT. That makes 2 turnovers...

It was on the good side of so-so, I agree...

I believe that if he can keep his completion % to close to 60, with more td's than int's we'll be alright... he's not asked to win it all, just to get it to the people that can make stuff happen. He has to work on his long ball touch.

No Offense meant but almost every QB lit up the 49ers.

That was my same way of thinking... I just did not write it. Thx for pointing that out!

The Niners were 7-9 that season, not as horrible as they are now.

The game being talked about by Rod Smith, was against San Diego, Frerotte completed 36 of 58 passes for 462 yards, 5 TD's, 4 INT's. San Diego was 0-11, they won the following week against Kansas City.
