I just posted this question on a Browns forum and these are the replies I have received so far. They are interesting to say the least. And they concern me especially the penalties they imply.

"Hi, Miami Fan here"

Can you give us Fans in Miami any idea about L.J. Shelton?

What are his strengths, weaknesses if he is starter material or is better suited as a backup and which side should be play on right on left? etc. etc.

Thanks for any info or insight you can impart.

Not a bad LT, but speed rushers eat him up. So he needs TE/RB help quite a bit. OA though, I have seen much worse. But then again, your talking to a browns fan lol.

Just my opinion, he's a decent tackle, but a touch slow and had concentration issues, false starts etc. at inopportune times.

One who needs help huh? Well that's not good. All the OT's on Miami team needed help in one form or another last year. LOL...

Ok gents thanks for the info.

Damn that is the last thing they need. Miami was one of the league leaders in those kind of bone head plays last year. In fact there were whole weeks where the media would hound Nick Saban on this very issue... LOL...Oh well, we shall see if the grass is any greener. LOL

Thanks for the info..

Houck could make a huge difference with him.

ya... i agree 100%, especially with the technical and mental issues such as avoiding penalties...

i get weary thinking of when we play at the colts next year. not only with dwight freeney, but the crowd noise could cause some false starts...

He may not be the best left tackle in the world, but I'll tell you right now he's an upgrade from Damion McIntosh.

That, is NOT in question.

If he loses 20lbs it may help his quickness. Coaching can iron out dumb penalties.

Yeah, I agree he is definately an upgrade, and who knows the grass may just be greener!

Have we just resigned McIntosh? Sounds exactly like our former LT.

I think Houck makes everybody better, but if you are slow you are slow. But for that amount of $ he will be our starting LT. You do not pay that amount for a backup. if he's not Feeley ...

heres an excerpt from NFL insider- doesnt sound too appealing:Shelton is a massive, wide body hog type OL and he never fit as an OT because of lack of quickness on the perimeter, and for some strange reason he did not flourish inside, where his skills would seem to be more suited. He does have excellent overall strength and when he can engulf defenders he can be very effective. He has an excellent initial punch and he uses his long arms and hands well. He can certainly handle the bull rush and he is at his best in a short area power game. He lacks speed and range and he is vulnerable if you put him on an island. Not only does he struggle with quickness off the edge, but he's at his worst vs. double moves and because he lacks balance, he tends to overextend and he cannot redirect or recover.

Bingo!! I really don't think this signing changes whether or not we were planning on drafting a LT. We need to realize we didn't have one LT on the roster worth a damn.
