I thought it would be interesting to compare Ronnie Brown's stats to some of the other more notable RBs in the 2005 draft. If you take into consideration the O-line Brown was behind, the fact that Brown has split carries with Ricky, and his knee injury in 07, I think his numbers are very solid.

Frank Gore 3rd Round #65 overall: Through 59 games (46 games started) 4,441 Yds -- 4.7 Avg -- 22 TD (Receiving 1,425 Yds -- 8.3 Avg -- 4 TD)

Ronnie Brown 1st Round #2 overall: Through 51 games. (47 games started) 3,433 Yds, 4.4 Avg 23 TD (Receiving 1,151 Yds 8.4 Avg 2 TD)

Marion Barber 4th Round #109 overall: Through 60 games (16 games started) 3,052 Yds -- 4.3 Avg -- 36 TD (Receiving 1,010 Yds -- 7.4 Avg -- 6 TD)

Brandon Jacobs 4th Round #110 overall: Through 55 games (22 games started) 2,620 Yds -- 4.7 Avg -- 35 TD (Receiving 359 Yds -- 9.0 Avg -- 2 TD)

Cadillac Williams 1st Round #5 overall: Through 38 games (33 games started) 2,417 Yds 3.8 Avg 14 TD (receiving 337 5.6 Avg 0 TD

Cedric Benson 1st Round #4 overall: Through 47 games. (22 games started) 2,340 Yds 3.7 Avg 12TD (Receiving 365 Yds 7.9 Avg 0 TD)

Thanks for the post. I like Ronnie and would not want to get rid of him now that he is here. I also do not think that he has reached his potential yet.

That being said, your post is just another demonstration of the fact that you do not ever need to grab a running back in the first round. There are good backs available deep in almost every draft and the reality is -- and Ronnie is proof -- if you don't get a line and a QB first, your running back will do little to win games anyway.

Parcells is right, this game is played in the trenches and you build out from the line on both sides of the ball.

Had Ronnie not of torn his ACL last year he would of lead the NFL in yards from scrimmage. Those receiving numbers would be alot higher, probably 7-10 more TD's, and 600 more rushing yards. Though that did not happen and this season should be a true testament as to how he will come off a very productive season and full year and season to come off that knee injury. The funny thing is he was with caddy and benson as the top 3 runningbacks in the draft and look at what the latter produced. Though I do believe Ronnie is more of the complete back of all of them, not a shot at BJ's running ability, frank the tank's or marions, but Ronnie would be the guy I want to play for me. Also he runs the wildcat better than anyone, and with that he revolutionized the NFL and saved this franchise. Yes Pennington is another reason for saving the dolphins but without the wildcat how boring would this season of been!?!? And how much fun was it to assault New England with something they've never seen and out smart the 'genius' himself!

exactly, i am very against drafting running backs high just for that reason. Always some good backs that get undrafted.

you left out Morencey he was a great clooege running back and was doing fine until he injured his knee twice in a short time frame.

Vernand Morencey has better stats then cedric Benson and a better attitude as well he is from the miami area .
how is frank Gore doing ? I am glad that drafted Ronnie he is a class act and is a good runner.

I agree! I am not sure we had many other options though. Looking back at the top 10 picks that year there are only a couple that has had some success in the NFL. I don't think we would have been able to trade down either.

Morency only had a total of 726 YDS. I left several other RBs out that did not have comparable stats, or was not a big name player. Darren Sproles is another one in the 4th round that could have been mentioned.

Who knows if Ronnie would have lead the league in scrimmage yards. There was still 9 games left in the season. You cannot just assume that he stays on that pace. Look at Favre after 7 games this year or the Bills after 7 games. And how the hell did Ronnie revolutionize the league. The wildcat really did not have the impact of that magnitude. The forward pass is a revolution. The wildcat is not as of yet.

Good Research.

I say Gore #1, Brown #2, Barber #3, Jacobs #4

and Cadillac and Benson floating with the bust category. I would say Sabin made the correct RB choice.

i'll be soo happy for ronnie when he gets 1200 yrds this season. hopefully like 15 rushing TD this year since we will run better.

gotta be happy with gore's value in 3rd round, Jacobs was a steal too, but he was Ronnie's backup at Auburn

With the exception of Jacobs, all of those backs were feature backs. Brown usually only gets 60% of the carries, and with the injury setting him back, he would have likely been 1st on that list. I stand by our #2 overall pick in 2005.

I'm not big on RB's in the first round either. The only fair comparison however, is that of the number 1's. Jacobs, Barber & Gore (Gore due to injury? I don't recall) were not projected to be top 10's. They were pleasant surprises. Steals no doubt. But based on that, there's no arguing Ronnie was the best choice.

And I agree, his numbers aquit him well.

A lot of good backs out of the draft in 2005. I thought it would be cool to look up Ricky Williams Through 99 games (7,771 yards 4.0 yd avg 51TD's rushing)

2118 yards receiving 7.1 yd avg 5TD's

I for sure thought caddillac was gonna be the one after his first couple of seasons, I thought we picked the wrong auburn player but thankfully we made the right choice.

you coulda put it like this:

Jacobs = Fatty
Caddy = made of glass
Gore = whore. (i got nothing here)
Barber = Cant carry the load
Benson = Retard

Ronnie = God
