I had my doubts on Bowles as HC, but he proved me wrong at least in the first year. Hearing this from a Top 5 coach in the NFL cements the idea.

Even though I hated the Philbin Error, I can't fault Ross too much for not going with Bowles back then because the fanbase likely would have been pissed at that hire too. We all wanted fresh blood at the time, it just sucks he picked the wrong guy.

True story. I remember this board pounding the table for him to keep the job, too. What a mistake that whole process was.

I wouldn't declare Bowles a success just yet. His team choked away a playoff spot with the loss to the Bills.

If I received a dollar every time someone said those three words, I could self-fund an election campaign for POTUS.

I hope he is right

At the time philbin was a pretty big name.

Sparano wasn't a big name, but Parcells sure was. And most people referred to him as the one calling the shots.

wasn't Sparano pre Ross?

Philbin was a hot candidate coming from that GB O that had just won a SB then went 15-1(though they flamed out early in playoffs)

Yeah, the "flashy hire" didn't start with Ross though.

Saban, Cameron, Parcells, Philbin, Gase, all pretty flashy hires at the time.

I wanted Bowles, but I also know miamis fan base wouldn't of accepted it, ticket sales would of been abysmal if Ross made that hire.

If Bowles doesn't land himself a legit QB he'll be receiving his pink slip sooner than later.

nah this team needed an offensive minded head coach...someone with the brains to let tannehill drive...

Here's where I give a pass on not hiring Bowles:
1. You can't rely on an interim record as evidence for a hiring decision. Yeah Bowles went 2-1. Dan Campbell looked like a world beater after 2 games. The team played hard for Jim Bates after Wanny left. Short term interim success does not necessarily predict long term coaching success.

2. While many saw the potential in Bowles, was he ready to be a head coach at the time we needed a hire? Bowles may have finally developed his coaching chops under Arians' tutelage. If we hired him before he was ready, Bowles may have struck out after 3 years and been fired. Bowles' continued time as an assistant and then defensive coordinator under Arians can't be underestimated.

3. After being led down one path by Parcels and Ireland, Ross was looking for a different approach. That's likely why Philbin and Mike McCoy finished as the 2 finalists for the job. Ross was looking for an offense to harken back to the days when Marino was lighting up the scoreboard. That philosophy didn't necessarily fit Bowles' vision for an offense.
