I think it just comes in handy to let you know which users (your buddies) are online and also a quick more convienent way to PM. If your buddy is on, there's a green lighted circle next to their name on your Buddy List. Basically it just makes everything more convienent and useful for keep track of your buddies and PM'ing them.
