Please tell me that Jake Long isn't another Robert Gallery. Maybe I'm getting hysterical here, but didn't Gallery have the same glowing reports as Jake Long does now. Gallery couldn't handle speed rushers at all. Please tell me I'm wrong.

Chris,
Outside of both having played in the Big Ten, I don’t think the two players could be described in the same sentence. There were evaluators in the NFL when Gallery entered the draft — some even on the Oakland Raiders’ staff, who were obviously tuned out by Al Davis — who felt that Gallery’s short arms would never allow him to be more than a guard in the NFL. His lack of base strength and power have also been regularly exposed in the pros. Jake Long has long arms, is bigger, stronger and much more powerful in the lower body.
I could see where some concerns could creep in. Florida DE Derrick Harvey showed that Long could be caught off-guard. But Long looked much more comfortable in the second half and helped shut down Harvey later in the game, never giving up a sack. Vernon Gholston also gave Long trouble throughout his career, but keep in mind that Gholston is as physically gifted as most any pass rusher in the NFL and represents the highest level of competition Long will see in the pros.
The reality is that Long was not utilized in a blocking scheme that best displayed his talents during his final two years of college. When asked to come off the ball flat-backed and move a defender one-on-one, he is extremely powerful as a run blocker. So, to answer your question, evaluators see Long much more closely resembling Tony Boselli or Jumbo Elliott than Gallery, whose arm length and base strength limitations have proven to make him best-suited inside.

The Elliott comparison makes sense. But that's why Elliott went in the second round.

Can you find us a J.Elliott in the 2nd round, because I can find OLB's that will be as good as we need them to be.

Glenn Dorsey > Chris Long > Branden Albert > Matt Ryan > Vernon Gholston > Many Others > Jake Long > Few More People > Darren McFadden

Well according to this, how can you make Jake the pick? If he couldn't handle Gholston, how in the world will he be able to handle the DeMarcus Ware's, Shawne Merriman's, Adalius Thomas's, or Julius Peppers's of the world??? No chance, he will be exposed time and time again in the NFL. This is why Gholston HAS to be the pick!

On a more serious note. Elliott was a second round pick because his skill set projected him into the second round after condsidering upside and bust potential. Long is similar in my opinion because his skill set places him in a situation where he is likely to have more staying power at right tackle. That said, his inablity to really handle the bull rush concerns me a bit there.

Gholston takes most plays off and is very stiff in the hips. He should not be the pick either. That said, I believe he is a better prospect than Jake Long.

gholston HAS to be the pick because long will get exposed at the next level?

the fact that you say if he couldnt handle gholston how could he handle those other 4 defensive players makes it sound like you dont think hes on their level...you willing to play a OLB 50-60 million gauranteed and he isnt on their level?

agreed me to, i believe Gholston is still raw, hes still got some learning to do. with that said i dont know that i would pick a raw stiff OLB with the #1 pick. great upside, but great downside to.

im not a fan of to much of the top of the draft IMO, only a couple picks. but in order i would pick Dorsey, C.Long, Gholston, Ellis, R.Clady, J.Long.

unfortunatly. i believe they will pick Long. just hope that the FO knows what their doing.

Just thought that may be simpler than discussing the theory of drafting best player available instead of reaching on a guy since you won't find him the next round.

But most of the guys on your list would be a reach at #1. J.Long isn't a reach, he's only a reach to people who love some other prospect and want to pick one or two plays and use them as a deciding factor for someones career.

I guess taking DMac who's by far BPA will make an exciting backfield. Can't wait to have the most expensive backfield ever. And what happens next year when it's a RB BPA when we pick (We can be the Sunny version of Detroit). Is this not a stupid arguement, I understand C.Long and J.Long even Dorsey if BP feels there's a spot for him to excel in our 34 but anyone else makes little sense.

My top four are Glenn Dorsey, Chris Long, Matt Ryan, and Branden Albert. Those are the four elite talents in this draft in my opinion.

So says the media.

Time will tell who was the reach and who was not.

I just don't like the idea of picking an offensive tackle with the #1 pick. Many scouts feel that Clady will be just as good as Long will be in the NFL and is already a much better pass blocker and I certainly would not draft Clady with the first pick
