Maxwell will no longer be asked to shadow top receivers in man coverage or play as the left cornerback in zone. After going through his Seattle film in 2014, Maxwell was always at right cornerback and specialized in a mixture of Cover 2, Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone. His blend of length and speed made him a difficult corner to beat for chunk yardage.

This helps represent how poorly the Eagles utilized Maxwell’s strengths. He was exposed to sharp-cutting routes more often in man, and his stiff hips and heavy feet were not fit for that assignment. It’s one reason he struggled so much against inside releases.

The Eagles adjusted to Maxwell losing eight of his 16 routes in Week 1 and used him more in zone the rest of the season. It immediately paid off, as he lost just 14 routes in the next five weeks combined. His effectiveness was on par with what quality top cornerbacks produce because he was simply put in the position to better succeed.

Whatever makes us feel better about dropping 5 spots in the draft and taking on a contract someone else didn't want.

The contract isn't that bad, cheaper than the overpaid and undersized Grimes, 17th highest CB salary in the league, and Alonso's deal this year was scheduled to pay him about $900,000. If Alonso's knee holds up and Maxwell is used properly it's not a bad deal. I still think that Miami has a player targeted at #13 who they fully expect to be there, my guesses are Alexander, Apple, Nkemdiche and Elliot.

Our super bowl odds should look better after Vegas reads this article.

Seriously though, I do expect better from him than what he did in Philly.

yes we should all re-align our opinion with bleacher report instead

slurp slurp slurp

in all seriousness i do think byron maxwell should be more comfortable in our scheme than he was over in philly, and if he's healthy I think he'll contribute to our secondary just fine. he's not a lockdown corner and we've always seemed to want to miscast players so it's refreshing to actually have a square peg square hole kinda fit.

doesn't mean we didn't get hosed by a team in fire-sale mode dumping off every player they could....

... Watching the forum eat itself.

You know, this offseason is MUCH more entertaining than the last few. ;)

Pretty sad that now every thread can't go 5-6 posts without the slew of negativity overtaking it. I've gotta think that if you are that down on your team you could find something else to do with your time instead of coming here just to piss on everyone else's hope and optimism.

Limited much? :chuckle:

Let's just pretend opposing offenses won't scheme appropriately so we can all remain "positive".

It's like the ****in republican debate lol.

In all seriousness though, Maxwell and Alonso are both young (especially Kiko) and fit much better in our D than they did in Philly.

I also don't think dropping from 8 to 13 is that bad in this draft specifically. There will be very good defensive prospects available at 13.

Howie Roseman had a vested interest in clearing the decks as per the trades consumated by Chip Kelly, who was given the personnel authority ripped away from Roseman - he's a man on a mission now to pretty much re-write history and undo the work of Kelly. I posted the article because there's some good statistics/factual evidence in it, and I do think that Gase and Vance Joseph signed off on the deal (ie agreed with it) and that Maxwell will be a good fit in our scheme. Imo Alonso will get back to form 2 years removed from his ACL tear and back where he belongs at MLB.

In fact it happened in that exact game.

So much for that vaunted length and speed. He's even in the typical press and bail technique that was used and he had trouble with in Seattle.
