Now that the Ravens kicker just saved Baltimore's season, I'm reminded how Sturgis missed a shorter kick against Baltimore that triggered a really bad stretch after that which likely cost us the Buffalo game too.

obviously, what Baltimore's kicker did was freakin' amazing, but the contrast between this kid for the Ravens and our guy is just really caustic and abrasive. The effect it had on our two seasons is now very different and sad.

Once again, our backs are against the wall, with backup cornerbacks trying to stave off oblivion.

You're kidding yourself if you think Baltimore is losing another game this reg season. They will Beat Down the Patriots.

man we are balls deep in the playoff picture. I don't like Sturgis but we are good right now

Lots of blame to go around yet the Fins have also "stolen" some games too. I thought they would be 9-7 or 10-6 so I guess they are around where I thought they would be.

And Dan Carpenter cost us two games last year. Could have been 9-7 if he didn't miss kicks early in the season. Oh well, it happens. Bottom line, the Sturgis kick against Baltimore never should have been from 57.

Doesn't matter if the Ravens beat the Pats or not.

Win 2 games and we're in. That's all that matters.

Wtf are you talking about?

Two seasons? The missed kick against Baltimore made us lose to buffalo? Are you kidding me?

Sturgis missed a 55 plus yarder. If you blame the season on him, I can't explain enough how much I devalue your opinion.

Yeah.....so he played in the secondary in the second half of that game? Miami lost that game because the defense sucked balls in the second half.

on the other hand, if the refs called that same new rule FG formation on the Ravens that they suddenly remembered to call against NE in the jest win, Sturgis at least would have had a fighting chance from the 42 instead of 57. So assign some of that blame to inept officiating too.

Officials missed field-goal push call in Ravens-Dolphins game

Ravens AP

Given Sunday’s game between the Patriots and the Jets, everybody knows about Rule 9, Article 1, Section 3(2)(b) of the rulebook.

Before that, not many people did. Including game officials, apparently.

As explained by Albert Breer of NFL Network, the Ravens violated the rule against pushing players on the line of scrimmage in field-goal formation during a late 57-yard try from the Dolphins. The kick, if successful, would have tied the game. The kick, if it had come 15 yards closer after the flag that wasn’t thrown, may have been good.

Per Breer, the Dolphins gave the tape to the NFL, and the league conceded (privately) that the call was missed.

A review of the coaches film available via the NFL’s Game Rewind service conducted by PFT (that sounds so official) shows that Chris Canty was lined up between, but slightly behind, Arthur Jones and Haloti Ngata. After the snap, Canty got behind Jones and pushed.

The temptation to skirt the rule surely increases on longer field-goal attempts, when the trajectory of the kick necessarily is lower. In those situations, a strong push could result in a blocked kick.

The league thereafter decided to make the rule a point of emphasis, prompting V.P. of officiating Dean Blandino to send out a video explaining that game officials would be watching for future violations.

While some Patriots fans may point to the failure to flag the Ravens as further proof of a ****eyed conspiracy against the franchise that parlayed the tuck rule into its first Super Bowl win, the broader point is that the enforcement of the rule was, before Sunday, a work in progress. The Patriots either didn’t understand the rule or deliberately rolled the dice on the 56-yard attempt from Nick Folk, hoping the flag wouldn’t be thrown.

Either way, no one can claim ignorance of the rule going forward.

iamtiv - There is a big difference between kicking indoors and outdoors on a windy day. I don't know if you fully understand the difficulties associated with kicking into a breeze or even worse when a breeze is blowing across a ground or gusty? Some of the stadiums, like Foxboro and the Jets/Giants stadium in New Jersey have been designed to make it difficult for kickers when the breeze is blowing. The Foxboro miss was not a surprise given the fact that the wind was quite strong that day and he had never played in that stadium before.
The great kicking from Tucker tonight was indoors. You cannot compare the two. It was interesting to note that Joe elected to go for the long field goal in Pittsburgh the other week at the difficult end. Statistically they had the data on TV that showed only one FG from over 50 yards down that end of the stadium. It was clearly a stupid decision to go for it and I wonder if Joe knew the statistical results.
My general points are: (1) Sturgis is a good kicker and don't be too disheartened that he had a few misses. He is extremely good.
(2) Wind conditions at certain stadiums are significant. Don't get too obsessed with the distances, because it's not an apples and apples comparison.
