Asked about that pick. Bradnt said it was a great pick. Then i asked the great question DE or OLB. He said without a doubt NOT a LB. And would be on the line.. If anyone was listening i was Buddy From mo

ya i duno how people can say Merlin will be a OLB for us... those people are nuts.. Merling is HYYYYUUGE and will be our Richard Seymour/Ty Warren type..very gooooood pick, great value

This makes me wonder whether him and JT will both be on the line or if JT will be a LB. I think he'll be a LB.

I'm very happy to have him on our team regarless of where he lines up

Ozzy rules!!

Merling is not a blue chip guy. If he was he would have been drafted mid 1st regardless of the sports hernia injury. He looks to have great value for where we picked him and looks also to add great value to our 3-4 front 7 though.

It will be nice to finally shut down other team's running games. I don't see why we can't have JT on one side and Merling on the other...book end DE's.

Merling absolutely could play OLB for us, he ran faster 40 times than Chris Long before his sports hernia, which will be fixed now.

I see him in that position, Parcels & company like their DE's to look more like Kendall Langford...more in the 300 pound range.

I was thinking the same thing...and if Merling turns out to be half the player everyone thinks he will be,this could be great.

I would think JT would be better at the OLB spot. I'd like to see us run the hybrid 3-4/4-3 (assuming JT is still on the team) as it takes advantage of all of JT's skills, however it doesn't look like that's going to happen. I would think Merling would project as either a DE or ILB. He's pretty good at run stuffing, but needs to work a little bit on his pass rushing. The fact that it looks like he can go either way makes the pick look even better.

Maybe you didn't get the newsletter. But we won't be running a 4-3..

In a 3-4 our D line would get killed with the lightweight taylor over tackle head up. Absolutely killed in the running game.

Check around the league and look at the D-lines in a 3-4. The 3-4 ends that can stop the run are 300# and up.. Keisel who is the lightest one, at 285# is the worst run defense in the NFL. Teams ran 10 yards per carry on his side. The other side, with the bigger end, they were MUCH better however... The Jets are the 3rd worst in the league at Run D to one side and they have a light End in a 3-4 as well. Fact.

The teams that employ 300 pound ends in a 3-4 have by far the best run defenses. We will get killed with Taylor and the 275# Merling at ends in our 3-4. Absolutely killed.

Absolutely rediculous.
Merling currently weights 270 lbs and after some summer camps and hitting the weight room, he'll easily be 285 and anchoring our D-LINE!!!

3-4

Jason Taylor is a pash rush specialist. He plays the Outside Linebacker position in our 3-4 scheme.

this might help

Matt Roth, Vonnie Holiday, Phillip Merling, Rod Wright, Kendall Langford will all be battling for the 2 End positions

Randy Starks, Jason Ferguson, Paul Soliai and Steve Fifita will be competiting for the Nose Tackle position....
