When it comes to the 3-4 defensive alignment primarily used by the Miami Dolphins it is easy for the inside linebackers to go unnoticed because the outside linebackers tend to garner the spotlight with their pass rushing.
Torbor, who is similar in size to Ayodele at 6-2, 250, had his first exposure to a 3-4 scheme last year as he was coming off of a Super Bowl win with the New York Giants at the end of the 2007 season. He was a part-time starter with the Giants and had his best year in '07 when he registered 32 tackles (19 solo), one sack and one pass defensed in six starts while appearing in all 16 regular-season games and all four playoff games. Torbor made four tackles in New York's 17-14 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
Last year was a transition year for the former Auburn Tiger as he tried to gain a comfort level with a new defense and he only started one game for the Dolphins while becoming a regular on special teams. Torbor ranked fourth on the team in special teams tackles with 11 and added six (four solo) and a half a sack on defense, but he has had a strong training camp and had three tackles (two solo) in Monday night's preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
"I believe Reggie Torbor to date right now is one of the guys that I've been most impressed with from an improvement standpoint," said Sparano, who emphasized the importance of these preseason games for Torbor and some of the other players vying for more playing time. "We talk about three or four guys and he's one of the three or four guys."
