Head Coach Adam Gase said Saturday the decision whether to keep two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster always depends on the personnel, and rookie
Brandon Doughty is going to try to do everything in his power this summer to convince him to make it three this year.
While it’s way too early to make any judgments or predictions regarding the final 53-man roster, Doughty is off to an impressive start in camp.
“He does a great job as far as finding completions,” Gase said. “I made the comment to him one time, your progressions are usually wrong but somehow you find a completion. He’s like, well, that’s what I do. His whole career he’s found success getting completions.
“I’ve seen a guy that really did study over the summer because just being able to come out yesterday and as much red zone as he did, if you didn’t do anything over the summer, you were going to be in bad shape yesterday. And he did a good job. He came out there, he knew where to go with the ball, he found completions. He threw a couple of touchdown passes, so it was good to see that he took some time this summer and made sure he knew what was going on.”
Doughty, who played at North Broward Prep and grew up near the Baptist Health Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University, led the NCAA with a 71.9 completion percentage in 2015 when he starred at Western Kentucky, and led all FCS quarterbacks the past two years in passing yards and passing touchdowns.
