Camp observations: Miami Dolphins secondary is pulling down interceptions

Here's the issue- none of the guys that are picking off passes are part of our starting secondary. I've read all the time about Carroll & Wilson picking off passes, as well as some other guys, but these guys aren't Vontae, Sean Smith, YBell, or Clemons, and unless something changes those guys are gonna be out there most of the time.

A lot of good it will do us come week one that the guys on the sidelines have picked off lots of passes in training camp.

I'm failing to see your point... So, the guys (starters) who aren't picking off passes wont do it in real games? Do you want to start the guys that are picking off passes? How about be happy that we are seeing some good production from our 2nd team DBs who WILL see time this year just like they did last year.

Nope they will just spike them like a volleyball! Just like last year.

I'm not saying the team should start the second team. They aren't good enough to be starters. I'm saying that its a fundamental problem with this team's defensive philosophy (which dictated their drafting strategies) that they value guys who are better at minimizing mistakes than they are at actually playing the ball. 3 out of 4 of out secondary starters were drafted by this regime, and 4/4 have turnover potential that is almost none.

This team would rather have a guy whose coverage is there even though a good QB can throw the ball right through them (because they can't play the ball in the air) than a guy who might make a small mistake but could actually generate positive plays every once in a while.

I was wondering where you were going with this. So in essence, you are blaming Ireland for recuiting players that can generate positive plays? I hear your frustration, but I'm sure these guys had some picks in college, let's hope they can get off the schnide and grab a few next year.

Please go watch Vontae Davis highlights. He is an amazing player, plus Sean Smith has a WR backround. If he holds onto those passes last year he has the most picks in the Afc East

And now for some bad news:
and this guy is supposed to be our starting RT.:err:

if a guy with as run of the mill pass rush tools as trusnick is running circles around your starting right tackle its a bad omen...

I remember the scouting reports on Vontae said that he would be a good corner but wouldn't generate a lot of turnovers at this level. That's fine, and Vontae is a good player, probably the best in our secondary, but a guy who specializes in takeaway coverage without getting many picks should be balanced out. It's like in 2008, we had Will Allen on one side, a guy who has good coverage but no pick ability, but on the other side we had Goodman, who probably wasn't as good in coverage, but whose 5 picks were pivotal in us getting the record we did. If he didn't get a pick against KC in week 16, we don't come back in freezing weather and lose the division. If he doesn't pick two against Brett Favre the next week, we don't win the division.

That element right there is the one other thing, besides stable and consistent QB play, that was the difference between us winning the division in 2008 and us being mediocre in 2009 and 2010. Because here's the thing- except for the QB and the lack of turnover potential in the secondary, our team is much better almost every else than then. But a defense can't win games for a team with a mediocre offense until they can create scoring opportunities themselves.

that should one of the easiest things the defense should be able to do, especially since its henne throwing the ball

kcbrown, everytime I see that girl in your avatar pic I drool lol. Where can I find that pic, its too small on your avatar :D

Looking at Vontae's rookie year with 4 picks I thought he'd be a interception machine.

He had a dissapointing year 2 in terms of ints. Hopefully he catches those easy ones this year.

As I recall, and I don't recall much at my age, we would have had at least 2 more wins last year if we held onto EASY picks. The Cleveland and Jets game spring to mind. Am I missing one? I think the Detroit game too?

Same, what did he have, 1 last year?
