Does anyone know if Dom Capers is still eligible to interview for a HC position? I am not sure if his contract was ever adjusted to prevent this or not (last I heard he was allowed to).

Could he potentially interview for the SD job? That would really suck for us.

Don't think he will leave, he is one of the highest paid D-Coordinators in the league.

Yes, even though he signed a new deal here, he is allowed to leave to become a head coach at anytime.

Would you rather be a head coach or a coordinator? Plus, this isn't the Oakland Raiders, this is a team that just went 14-2 and could be in the Super Bowl next season. If Capers is offered the job, he is taking it.

He could leave, and probably would given the offer. But the fact is, San Diego has their choice of any assistant coach in the league. I don't see why they'd pick Capers for HC, when we didn't even make him our HC.

Capers can leave but with his salary, I don't think he would. If he does leave...Marty Schottenheimer for DC!

He could, but i don't think that San Diego will want him. I have a feeling that Ron Rivera is going to be the next San Diego HC. Either way, i sure hope Capers stays right here.

Dom Capers makes $2.6 million in 2007;
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2730315

The average salary for a head coach in 2007 is about the same; http://www.forbes.com/2003/01/24/cx_aw_0124coaches.html

Now take into consideration this is the average salary of all head coaches in the league. Simply playing the statistics, since Mr. Capers sits on the fence it is safe to say he has a 50% chance of making less, and a 50% chance of making more.

However what you need to take into consideration is a team offering him a head coaching job would be a desperate team. A team with little confidence they would be able to fill the void with anyone but Capers. A team looking for a defensive genius to give their team some spark. A team that would have to over-compensate to compete.

And of course no team would offer him less then the money he is expecting to make, attached to a head coaching job. It's like me telling you, you can come be the CEO of my Forbes 500 company, but you'll be making minimum wage still...

I am quite sure Capers would make more money, if offered a head coaching job. Unless teams were using him as bait, to pressure other coaches.

I like Rivera, but I'm not sure he makes sense since he runs a completely different style of defense than what San Diego currently does, and they would be smart not to tinker too much with that defense. Someone like Mike Singletary or an offensive coach like Norv Turner would make more sense.

Unless a coach has a substantial committment to and identification with a certain team (think Shula in Miami, or Chuck Noll in Pittsburgh, or even Belechick in NE) and absent compelling family or personal matters, he would have to be the most unambitious coach in the league to pass up the head coaching job of a team that went 14-2 last season and boasts considerable talent in favor of remaining a position coach on a team who's underachieving at best, outright rebuilding at worst, hasn't been to the playoffs since 2001, and will be playing in 2007 under a new and unproven coach.

He could legally leave, but I think it is important to consider if he actually wants to leave. Capers is not a young guy and has been a head coach twice. He is being paid head coach money with a lot less responsibility. We all know how tough it is to be a head coach in the NFL. It takes a toll on your overall life. I do not think he has a lot left to prove as a head coach. Even if he feels he does, I doubt that outweights the benefits of his current situation.

That's true, but that was with Wade Phillips at defensive coordinator, he's a 3-4 guy & they're practically starting from scratch now. Depending on how much the players/management want to change there style if they are even willing to, they could hire him. He is an established coordinator in the league & seems to be a players coach. Maybe they're willing to experiment a little on the defense and take a chance with him, or maybe like you said they wont even touch it & go another way. There aren't too many good choices out there, so they might not have the luxury to be so picky, who knows.

I actually forgot all about Norv Turner, he would be a great hire for them also. Either way, i'm very interested to see how the SD front office will handle all of this. They have a lot of work to do.

As good of a coordinator that Capers is, he hasn't fared off very well as a head coach. He got fired by the Texans for crying out loud! Why would the Chargers want him?

The Chargers already have their HC: Pete Carroll(speculation).

They have to keep the deal under wraps to comply with the Rooney Rule.

Why do you think Ron Rivera is going to be their first interview? The quicker they comply, the better, that way no reporter can dig fast and hard enough to uncover the truth.
