By all accounts, McCown has shown the most but not enough for his coach to say he's head and shoulders above the rest. Beck has been lost out there. That leaves the unflappable Henne kinda doing his thing. Playing like a rook one series, playing like a talented prospect the next. The fact is, he's playing better than Beck and that makes him the back-up as of right now. Should he outshine McCown in preseason, could we see him elevated to the starter?

I know it's still early in camp but we're a week away from preseason games with no clear cut favorite. What is clear is that Henne possesses a "quality" that the Trifecta liked and are now seeing. And poor John boy is simply not getting it done. I can see McCown as a solid back-up to an untested rook starting for a clear rebuilding team.

Thoughts?

IMO it will be the preseason GAMES that really tell the story. If Henne can produce consistently in those games and clearly demonstrate he's the man and he's ready for the big challange --- then yes, why not put him in?

Personally I doubt he's ready at this point --- but the possibility is definitely there. Furthermore, i don't give a rats arse WHO takes the job --- I just want someone to actually step-up and win the job in a clear, decisive manner. But that might not happen...

The rook doesnt have a chance in hell to start week 1...because he is just that a rook and unless from now until the 4th pre season game he is head and shoulders above the rest nothing of substance i know but JMO

I hope he does. Why start McCown? he has proven to not be consistently good enough to be a starter in the NFL. Henne has done about as good in practice. Plus our O-lin is good and the running game should be good so he won;t get killed like beck did last year. ay as well go with him from day one.

In all seriousness.. Henne will sit this season unless he demonstrates that he is the next Dan Marino. Even if Henne is better than Beck, he'll likely be 3rd string for this season.

They'll start McCown, and give Beck his shots. Whoever wins that battle this year will compete against Henne next year.

They wont put Henne out too early and ruin his confidence like the previous regime did Beck.

Being realistic here, McCown will most likely be the starter, because he is the Veteran of the trio, and actually has TRUE starting(and "winning", not as in winning season, but winning a game) experience, unlike Beck.
Beck has started, yes, but he didn't win a single one of his starts.
Henne will most likely have to sit and learn this year.

BUT...being who I am, I could see him pulling another current #7: Ben Roethlisberger. Looking like a rookie, then all of a sudden, just exploding and take the starting job like he's been doing it for years. But thats just my personal opinion

In my opinion, if Henne ends up starting from the beginning, it's going to be another long season.

That's not taking anything away from Henne at all, I mind you. It's just a fact that, for the most part, rookie quarterbacks don't produce right away.

I firmly believe he'll need a year to learn and develop. If he goes in as a starter sometime this season, then we are once again in trouble at QB.

Henne sounds promising from the various reports from camp. But, I can't see them starting Henne week one. Dan got in what, wek 5 or 6? I can see him getting a chacne around that time. I hope McCown can start well and postpone that but we'll see.

I will tell you this, based on what has happened so far, Henne's time with the first team in pre-season just increased. I still think McCown will start but Henne wont be far behind.

I think QB's should be thrown right in to the fire. Great QB's can get beat up a little, and for the really good ones they come back stronger the next year. We are rebuilding, what do we have to lose by starting Henne if Beck doesn't work out? I don't believe in that confidence bullcrap, the guy played in front of 100,000 fans. A few bad games in the NFL won't kill him, especially if he the insight to learn from his mistakes.

I wouldn't neccessarily rule out Henne starting on day 1..Remember back in 93 Bledsoe was a rookie and started (granted he was the #1 overall pick). The patriots won 5 games that year, the previous year they only won 2. Also, the next year he led the team to the playoffs, which it failed to miss the previous 8 years. Sound familiar anyone??? Tuna can make it happen if he really wanted to.

I agree with this, if it's week 7 and the team knows they aren't going anywhere. I don't see it as beneficial to throw Henne out there in week 1 and indirectly say "Hey, we're rebuilding!". The team should try and win with the best QB they see fit first. If that doesn't work out, and a chance at playoffs isn't likely (which will most likely be the case), then I say give Henne his chance.

But, if he earns the job by beating out the others, good on him. I don't think he will.
