Our O line is pretty good at pass protecting but do you think they will be able to create holes for Ronnie this year?

First of all, welcome.

Second of all, wrong forum. You need to post this in the Miami Dolphins forum:

Third of all, who knows? Sometimes they are able to create holes, but other times, not really.

welcome to Finheaven bro.

That IS the big question in my mind for the first game, after that I think the reps will start making a difference. After watching the magic Hud pulled off last year, I am "reasonable" confident that by midseason it will all come together. As coach Houck told us last year, it is whole that affects the part. As the unit gets comfortable together, it will get a little better. As we figure out what works in the playbook, as the qb gets more comfortable...etc. All those things help the line work better and I "hope hope hope" it does so sooner as opposed to later, the whole offense is riding their backs. They are a BIG line and we will simple wear out some teams, it will be interesting to see how we fare against p-burg for 60 minutes.

:welcome: I went ahead and moved your thread to the Miami Dolphins forum.

I think they'll get better as time goes on. Cohesion is a big part of the problem right now. Much like last year. Vernon Carey already looks way better than his first two years. Always good when one of your tackles gets better.

The big question is whether Shelton will be an upgrade at LT. And whether or not Anderson can do a good job at RG. If not, can Toledo make noise this year and ascend (and stay healthy)??

I'm more worried about the RG spot than I am about the LT spot.

I tend to take the more pessimistic view, that we really don't have any all-pro caliber players on the line, so it pretty much makes sense that many of us are sitting here wondering if the line's gonna be good enough. The fact that I didn't see a single gaping hole made in the preseason is pretty concerning.

The major issue with the O-line is that Rex Hadnot does not have enough experience at center. I am sure he is missing calls that impact Bennie's development at RG. If he can mature as a center, then we will be fine.

This is just a guess, based on one year of watching Houck's line, but it seemed to me that last year, he spent the first part of the season really focusing on getting the line to protect the quarterback.

And once they had a good handle on that he moved to the next level with them, focusing more on opening rushing lanes.

That's how it looked last year, no idea if that's really how he works or not. But it wouldn't surprise me if this line starts off improving at protection and gradually gets better at rushing holes and decreasing penalties.

I think we can, But we played some great d-lines and I also think we will be able to run the ball alot more as it gets later in the game and the D gets tired. TOP is huge

Agree

Agree with most ppl thus far. Run blocking is hurting for now, but Houck will help the line improve as the year goes on. He molds big men who underachieve into better players. That describes Shelton (who hasn;t looked as good as the hype preceding him) and Bennie Anderson. Toledo will prolly take Anderson's spot by Oct/Nov anyways, given his athleticism and how quickly he was learning from Houck in training camp.

I'll judge this line by their performance in October and after.

B.

Welcome to FinHeaven, good post. We seem to be able to pass bloc, but we can't seem to open any holes for running through. Hopefully this improves fast under Houck, or we're in trouble IMHO.

The "hype" about "Shelton" was that he was no better than Mcintosh and so far... The Bennie RG thing has me puzzled. I know he was bad, but his starting role was assumed because we had no one else. Then, he doesn't play with the rest of the starters against the Rams, in fact, he doesn't play at all, and there's no mention of injury? Surely he needed more "reps" than anyone! Hmmmmm.

Ronnie will get his yards, the O-line don't have to be great.
C-pep will make up for all of of those 3 down and 1 situations that we missed last year.

I agree he looked terrible, the fins need to rethink that posisition, maybe put Vernon Carey back in that spot, or try wade smith.

I wanted Nick Mangold so bad. Would have solved this problem bigtime. That is now what keeps going through my mind.

Who cares if you draft a center at 16. He is smart and can handle the pressure and has all the tools. I aboslutely hate that many many people think OL can just be had in the late rounds. Its BS if you ask me. In my mind, Nick Mangold was a much better choice for this team with its needs than Jason Allen and we still could have gotten a good S later IMO. Saban is not perfect and I do not expect him to be. But if we do not invest in some seriou future OL next year, we will never go to the big dance. We cant keep looking for fourth rounders with ? and expect good things to happen on the OL!
