OK, I don't like basketball at all, never have and probably never will, it just doesn't appeal to me (aside from the March Madness tourney, I do watch that). Since I don't like it I have never gotten into all of the logistics of it. I do know all the rules and stat categories and such, but one thing I have never understood, or bothered to look into, is how the NBA's draft works. What is this whole "lottery" thing?

It's a way to prevent teams from "TANKING" it to get the #1 pick. So, even if you try to lose on purpose and have the worse record in the league and lock up that #1 pick, you aren't guarnteed that top pick.

the nba put the lottery in for non playoff teams. those teams get a proportionate # of ping pong balls based on where they rank in terms of w/l. so 1st worst team has around a 22% chance to get 1st pick, 2nd worst is around 14% and so on.

The reason the lottery was put in was so teams couldnt tank games at the end of the season though some will claim the reason it was put in, in 1985 was so the nyk would get ewing (1st yr of the lottery).

all of the non playoff teams get put into the lottery...the team with the worst record, has a higher chance of getting the number one pick...the second worst has the second best and so on and so forth. I believe then they draw balls with teams logos on it (the worse record you had...the more balls you had in the pot)

I hope that helps

Thanks for the info guys. So what I got was the non-playoffs teams get a certain percentage of the balls in the lottery, based upon their record, and the draft order for those teams is determined that way. So as far as the playoff teams, they just have a set order based on where they finish in the playoffs?

Yes and no. The non-playoff teams all have a chance at the top 3 picks (no one mentioned that; the lottery draws for the top 3 spots in the draft. Thus the team with the worst record is assured a pick no lower than 4th), but the worst team to make the playoffs is automatically given the 15th pick in the draft, and the team with the best record the 30th. In the NFL, the last two picks belong to the teams that make the Super Bowl, but the NBA goes strictly by record. So Detroit will pick 30th this year, even if they don't win the NBA title.

I think Toronto got the first pick in this year's Lotto...and they were only suppose to have around a 7% chance of getting the first pick, while Portand and Chicago had around a 25% chance and got the shaft.

It's time for David Stern to retire (he just happens to have been the one to make sure the Knicks got Pat Ewing, and the Cavs "surprise, surprise" got the Ohio high school basketball phenom named LeBron James....geee, imagine the odds of that happening by chance???)

Makes you think the NBA is fixed even more than the WWE.

I love the old "frozen envelope" conspiracy theory with Ewing. I don't believe it, mind you, but it's fun to kick around.

Of course using the "James to Cleveland" lottery draw as evidence that Stern rigs the lottery is preposterous on more levels than I care to count. What possible interest could the NBA have in having one of it's biggest stars in Cleveland, for God's sake? (In fact, Cleveland had the best odds of getting the #1 pick that year.)

yeah i can see how the lottery is fixed. last year, the #1 team was milwaukee. this year, toronto. THE FIX IS IN!!
