Explain the difference to me between UFA, RFA and FA?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

UFA/FA are the same things. These are guys without a contract, free to sign whoever they feel like signing with. The "U" is for Unrestricted.

A Restricted Free agent is someone, usually a draft pick who is reaching the end of their contract. A team can put a tender on him, and another team has to pay more then that, and give to team draft picks corresponding to the level of the tender(1st round, 1st/3rd, etc).

That's kind of a bare bones, someone will probabaly correct me ;)

Thanks. I knew what they stood for but didn't know what they meant. What does tender mean? And I won't bug you again. I'm hearing we might "tender" Ogunleye.

So what's an "Exclusive Rights" Free Agent?

It has to do with number of accured seasons. If a player only has two years accured, he is an exclusive rights free agent. That means that his current team holds all the cards. He either signs with that team or he doesn't play at all. Leonard Henry is an example of an ERFA. He either signs our tender or he doesn't play in the NFL next year.

A restricted free agent has 3 years accured and has reached the end of his contract. Travis Minor and Morlon Greenwood are restricted free agents.

Unrestricted free agents have accured 4 or more years. Todd Wade is now unrestricted. Chris Chambers signed a 4-year contract as a rookie. So he'll be an unrestricted free agent next year.

This should help for now except they don't explain ERFA. Exclusive Rights Free Agents have two or less accrued seasons. They can only negotiate with the team that has rights to them. Which means they get tendered or offered minimum contracts.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

â€â€FB Femi Ayanbadejo (A quality backup to starter Rob Konrad who also can contribute on special teams; May re-sign if unable to land with a team willing to give him a shot at starting).

â€â€CB Terrell Buckley (Did an excellent job as Miami's nickel cornerback; Due a raise from the veteran minimum salary of $755,000).

â€â€DL Rob Burnett (Missed three games this season because of a knee injury; At age 36, is nearing retirement).

â€â€S Arturo Freeman (Lost starting spot at strong safety to Sammy Knight in the preseason; Could be re-signed as a backup and special teams player).

â€â€WR Oronde Gadsden (Re-signed with six games remaining but didn't make a significant impact).

â€â€LB Tommy Hendricks (Miami's special teams captain who also provides depth as a competent backup linebacker).

â€â€G Jamie Nails (Struggled in his first season back after suffering a torn Achilles' tendon in 2002 but still started 15 games at left guard).

â€â€TE/LS Ed Perry (Suffered a season-ending knee injury in the preseason; Value has skyrocketed with his two replacements struggling during the season).

â€â€RB Charlie Rogers (Didn't provide the punch expected in Miami's return game and also failed to make a mark on offense).

â€â€P Matt Turk (Did an excellent job after being signed as an early-season replacement for Mark Royals).

â€â€T Todd Wade (Four-year starter at right tackles; Among UFAs, should be the team's top priority to re-sign).

â€â€S Shawn Wooden (A core special teams player who probably can be re-signed for the NFL veteran minimum).

â€â€CB Jimmy Wyrick (A late-season roster addition to replace injured CB Jamar Fletcher, who had suffered a season-ending forearm injury).

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

â€â€LB Morlon Greenwood (Started to emerge as a difference-maker on defense in his third NFL season; may assume nickel linebacker duties from Junior Seau in 2004).

â€â€RB Travis Minor (Did a solid job on special teams and in limited action as Ricky Williams' backup).

â€â€DE Adewale Ogunleye (After leading the AFC in sacks with 15, Ogunleye should be the hottest RFA on the market).

â€â€QB Sage Rosenfels (Indications are he is ready for a backup role).

EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS FREE AGENTS

â€â€RB Leonard Henry (Had a solid preseason but didn't receive a carry in 2003).

â€â€T/G Greg Jerman (A competent backup at the tackle and guard spots; Started one game at right guard in place of the injured Todd Perry.

â€â€DT Dario Romero (Ready to assume a regular role in Miami's defensive line rotation).
