Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano openly state their vision of the Dolphins as a dominant team. Can the Dolphins be that dominant team the front office envisions during the NFL 2009 season?
The potential is currently on the team. A dominant team needs to be able to run the ball whenever the coaches desire it. That requires a big, physical, mean offensive line. Long, Carey, Grove, and Smiley are capable of this type of rushing attack. Is there another guard that can be the missing piece of the dominant line?
A dominant team needs a physical defense, and a physical defense must shutdown the running game. Lanford, Merling, and Roth should improve over last year. The addition of G. Wilson gives the Dolphins two hard hitting safties that enjoy stuffing the run. Does Ferguson have enough in the tank to enable the growth of players and new players to shutdown the run? Will either Eric Green or Vonte Davis be able to strongly support the run?
A dominant defense must have a good pass rush and a secondary that can be physical in the first 10 yards to shutdown a passing attack. Will the addition of Jason Taylor and Cameron Wake give the Dolphins enough push to consistently pressure the QB? Can the corners hold up long enough for us to utilize an improve pass rush?
There is no doubt in my mind that the potential is there for a dominant team. The question is can the players fulfil their potential?
