I keep reading all this hype about how we miss out on so many free agents and how no one wants to sign here. I think its a bunch of garbage. I think Jeff Ireland may have some issues with his personality and way of negotiating but bottom line is this is a business. Name one team built through free agency? The Superbowl caliber teams draft well and resign their own. It only makes sense to pay the guys who you know and know the system. Sometimes systems make the player and when they get that big contract they flounder in another teams system. The Redskins are a prime example of that. We can't throw money at every big name out there, otherwise we couldn't field one side of the ball. I mean the same people that keep complaining this year were probably beating their wives after the Jets got Burris, Holmes, Cromarte and Tomlinson. I mean the Jets were stacked with all those signings right. Ummm, didn't make the playoffs last year. The only guy we ever really missed on was Drew Brees because he was a done deal and Saban decided to go Culpepper. Other then that the FA can cry all they want that they didn't get overpaid (aka Vibe) by this franchise and the guys Ireland drafted last year along with this years draft better produce or that will be the real answer if Ireland and this front office has what it takes.

The problem isn't that we're frugal in free agency. That's fine. I can respect that.

The problem is that our drafts haven't been very good. Who's a playmaker we've picked up in the draft? One guy, just one guy Ireland has drafted who has made you say 'wow' and made a lot of big plays for this team?

Great post.

Only flaw I can see with it is that many of us have absolutely no faith that Ireland can build a winner.

Can you name one Super Bowl team that hasn't used free agency wisely in conjunction with the draft?

All that post and there's a simple rebuttal. He hasn't built through the draft or fa, and we are still in an awful position after 4 years. Your post suggests that you build great teams through the draft and he hasn't shown the ability to do that.

LMFAO...seriously...thats it? He signed in 2006...they won it 4 years LATER...try again
? You're saying Charles Woodson is not an important part of the Packers championship run? He was a free agent pickup. You were wrong. Deal with it. When you're not picking up Gibril Wilsons and making quality FA pickups instead then you're not constantly filling holes every year.

Well said.

So 1 player made that team right? 1 player who didnt play MUCH in that super bowl...and one free agent signing hardly constitutes being "built" threw free agency...so...you are wrong...deal with that

I dont' think anybody wants to build this team through free agency... you supplement through free agency.. theres 22 guys on offense and defense... with 6-7 picks a year, one would have to hit on every pick for 3 years straight to build a team through the draft... we hit on about 2 a year on average...

nothing wrong with signing a eric winston, or mario manningham rather than hoping a floyd or kalil fall in our lap every draft.

No one "builds" through FA. That's obvious. Everyone knows that. The point you were refuting is that championship teams use free agency to supplement quality drafts which Charles Woodson and the Packers is a perfect example of in the proper use of free agency. Now you're also trying to make the case that Charles Woodson isn't an important part of the Packers. Just stop.
