Can you name one Superbowl Team built through FA?

Draft history. No starting caliber QBs.

FA history. 3M dollars or less then 3 percent of the whole cap allocated to the most important position and cast offs from losing teams. JAX used to be the worst franchise and they let Gerrard go. If TEBOW goes to JAX then guess what, their franchise will be more relevant then Miamis.

Is that enough evidence to show how important this coming draft is and if he does not land a starting QB in this draft then we are the new JAX? Is seattle ends up with a better record then Miamis and we dont have a future QB start on our roster then Fans will be bolting out the door.

The problem isn't that we're frugal in free agency. That's fine. I can respect that.

The problem is that our drafts haven't been very good. Who's a playmaker we've picked up in the draft? One guy, just one guy Ireland has drafted who has made you say 'wow' and made a lot of big plays for this team?
This +1

Yah because Ireland has brought us so many play makers and impact players through the draft.

No one "builds" through FA. That's obvious. Everyone knows that. The point you were refuting is that championship teams use free agency to supplement quality drafts which Charles Woodson and the Packers is a perfect example of in the proper use of free agency. Now you're also trying to make the case that Charles Woodson isn't an important part of the Packers. Just stop.

WTF Charles Woodson was to my knowledge the LAST free agent signing in Green Bay...4 years PRIOR to them making a Super Bowl run...and he sat out MOST of that Super Bowl win an injury....

Lol, exactly. The worst part is Ireland has actually TRIED to build through the draft, failed at that, then tried to patch holes thru free agency and trades and failed at that too. The guy does exactly NOTHING right.

That's why I don't get why people are saying this is a new beginning, we're building through draft. Ireland has done this since he was first hired here. We shouldn't be rebuilding in his 5th year here.

I agree with you to an extent in that most playoff teams are consistently good at drafting players, but certain teams, like the New Orleans Saints, are an exception. Since 2006, they've signed 28 free agents (that's third in the league next to only Detroit and Denver), including guys who started during/ made significant contributions to the Super Bowl season like Drew Brees, Darren Sharper, Jabari Greer, Pierre Thomas (UFA), Lance Moore (UFA), Jonathan Goodwin, Jamar Nesbit (that's two starters on the offensive line, even though Nesbit only started half the year), Bobby McCray, Remi Ayodele, Anthony Hargrove, Scott Fujita, Randall Gay, Garrett Hartley (UFA), and Mike Bell (these are only guys who were on the 2009 team, let's not forget key signings like Darren Sproles, who last season had 87 carries for 603 yards [6.9 ypc], 86 rec. for 710 yards, and 69 total punt and kick returns for 2,696 all-purpose-yards [highest total for as long as stats on all-purpose-yardage have been available, i.e. since 1932] and 10 TDs).

On top of that, if you look at what signing a free agent like Kurt Warner did for both the Rams and the Cardinals, what Rich Gannon did for the Raiders, and the fact that Bill Belichick won three Super Bowls with 3 free agents anchoring the offensive line (Stephen Neal, Joe Andruzzi and Tom Ashworth), and guys like Corey Dillon, Rodney Harrison, Mike Vrabel, Larry Izzo, and Adam Vinatieri (UFA) contributing to other positions of need, it's tough to argue that Super Bowl teams can't be built, or at the very least, can't be helped out tremendously through free agency.

The truth is that Free agency and the draft go hand in hand... You do not have to be the "big winner" in free agency if you are good at drafting... Ireland has been very hit or miss with the draft... He has found some decent talent in the drafts but has yet to give us someone who really makes our hearts pound when they are on the field. If Thomas and Gates do not improve this year then we are definitely going to be hurting and if he cannot find a QB that makes us think that the future may be ok then he is going to be in trouble and the next GM will be able to pick Barkley next year... So pretty much we are where we are and can't do a whole lot about it... Can't wait for the season to start so that I can quit reading about all the we should have done this or we didn't do that so that I can instead read about the games....

WTH are you talking about? Your talking about relevance in a business model not a solid winning football team I dont give a hoot about Tim Tebow selling tickets if the Phins win the tickets sell themselves. Remember we had the Mularky up close & personal and with the tallent we had then vs. Jax now I dont see them being better then us anytime soon. And just looking @ the QB market we did whiff on Manning ok that sucks but Ten,SF did also, With them having starting caliber QB's already and future franchise guys in the waiting.Seattle took a trip to meet him & was told no, The Chiefs got the same answer. We didnt whiff on Flynn if Philbin was truely sold on him he would be here, we would have never blinked an eye. So he was obviously backup material with some promise, Just think of how youd rip Ireland for wasting $$ on a backup. Take a step back and breathe we havent made it through the draft yet.

Ireland started building this team using the Parcells Philosophy, which is run, run, run, a little defense, and run some more. QBs are an afterthought to Parcells; he prefers big, strong, slow players. We all know that Parcell's plan doesn't work anymore, so now we have new coaches who want to go in a new direction. The owner agrees, and said that he wants a more exciting offense. This is more than just a change in gameplanning and strategy, this means that a lot of current players on the roster won't be a good fit in the new system. There's no way that a flashy FA signing or two and one draft will make us competitive right away. Miami is rebuilding, but they don't want to call it that. I have no problem with rebuilding. The only problem would be if Ireland ONLY knows how to evaluate talent that would fit the Parcells mold. We already know that he's been using the Parcells Plan of "Never use a 1st round pick on a QB". (To be fair, this year there are no franchise QBs available to us in the 1st round.)

It's possible that with input from the coaching staff Ireland can draft players to fit our new scheme. But, I believe that on his own Ireland will still follow the Parcells Plan since that is what he knows. I have no hatred toward Ireland personally; I just wanted Ross to cleanse the team of EVERYONE who was associated with or brought in by Parcells.

Many good points here and I do agree that good teams will supplement through FA. But what I am trying to establish here is that most teams will be lucky to get one or two quality upgrades through FA. So many posters think we should have signed Manning, Williams, Winston and a top WR. Is it just me or can no one do math? I mean we sign all those guys and we need to make about 60 million in cap room. It's absurd. Heck we couldn't even afford two of them. Dont get me wrong, I dont give Ireland a complete pass on the first three drafts with the Tuna and honestly his 2011 draft is still suspect as most of the picks didn't hit the field that often. I think if the 2011 picks dont see time this year and if 1 or 2 2012 picks dont make an impact then the truth in his ability to draft will unfold. I think the draft has been the area this team needs to address. It sucks being in the middle most of the time at 7-9 cause you have to give up so much to trade up or pass on a quality position to trade down because your drafting for need rather than the best player available. I think the trading down and bad trades we have made have cost us too much. All this jumping up and down is a bit ridiculous. I think this is Irelands last shot to get it right or he hits the streets at the halfway mark. At least thats how I would approach it in a business.

Plunkett from NE to the Raiders and Steve young went from the Bucs to the 49ers.

If Denver wins next year then Manning the biggest of FA of all time will be the best case. Brees to NO is a great example. Phins had the chance to draft Brees but Wannstadt wanted a nickel CB.

By the way I know much more then the guy that referenced my reply above. I have watching the fins since 1970 and know a few things about the history.

so basically your looking for a star WR or RB, cus those are the supposed playmakers. Its a little unfair cus we drafted high two OL.
