Okay, okay. I don't want to assist in the bombardment of this forum with meaningless evaluations and half-minded quips about certain people, but this is my report on how I think we performed tonight.

Feel free to agree or disagree :D

Played to the grade:

Gus Frerotte
Danny Farmer
Lorenzo Diamond
Anthony Alabi
Brock Berlin
Kris Richard (bar the play where he got flat beat for a TD)
Donnie Jones
Matt Roth
Travis Minor
Jason Glenn
David Boston
Jamar Martin

Didn't make my jaw drop:

Ricky Williams
Manny Wright
Deanre Eiland
John St. Clair
Stockar McDougle

Most impressive player: Toss up between Lorenzo Diamond and Gus Frerotte

Mr. Obvious' quote of the day: "Ricky Williams will have to go into camp and earn the trust of his teammates" - Al Michaels. C'mon Al, where the hell have you been? Water under the horse trailor.

If I had to make 3 cuts based on camp and today: Derrius Thompson, Donald Lee, Chris Akins. Sorry guys...it was a toss up between DT and Danny Farmer.

Did you see that?: Nick Saban's TC speech they showed early in the game was impressive. He had them all listening, believing, entrusted in him. That's our leader.

Core Evaluation

QBs: A.J. didn't WOW, but wasn't helped by mediocre blocking and lackluster opening running (9 yards in first half). Got a little banged up, his hair didn't get messed up though. Phew. Frerotte impressed me, especially on the long ball in the end zone to Chambers. Played smart. Rosenfels and Berlin played guys who can't even make the Bears second team, so take what you want from that.

Wide Receivers: Most probably the unit that most impressed me today. Chambers caught a great one and dropped a good one. Josh Davis didn't get too much time. Maurice Mann made two good catches. Receivers out of the back field did well also. For a man who has a year off, David Boston satisfied me out there.

Running Backs: Lamar Gordon was a little disappointing in my mind, but Chicago's D. Line played very well early on. Ricky was given the least opportunities, running room from the snap. Morris was refreshing, hit the hole hard(est), came off alright. Minor impressed me on the little he did. Probably the most satisfying. Kay-Jay was nice, I think he has worlds of potential but got little opportunity. Jamar Martin blocked well.

Offensive Line: I hummed and harred on this. I think we had some lapses, but were OKAY for the most part. Chicago played very well on the blitz early and Lovie Smith is always going to have an impressive D. Line coming at us. I think we'll improve. I liked Alabi tonight.

Defensive Line: This was a new breed line for us. We saw a lot more blitzing from the linebackers, a lot more cover work from JT, some different stuff. I liked Matt Roth in some areas, he works hard and he had to be double teamed a few times. Manny Wright looked sloppy, tired and slow off the mark. Kevin Carter looked good.

Linebackers: Jason Glenn looked nice tonight, I thought he was a safety for most of the game. Crowder was looking good, missed a few tackles but played well. Spragan impressed me in what he did.

Defensive Backs: Probably our biggest 'problem area' in this game, but mostly due to the fact we mix-n-matched a lot. Daniels looked nice, although slow off the mark on occasion. Deandre Eiland was borderline for me. I just think he got beat too often though. Sam was alright, broke up a good pass but got flagged. He looks energetic. Schulters and Tebucky will be stars here IMO. Tebucky looked quick to the defender on plays in his area. Reggie Howard was an interesting pick to start, I think they picked away at him a little but he did alright.

In conclusion, I think we did good in this game. Leading for most of the way, controlling the game mostly though the third quarter. We didn't make any major mistakes and David Bowens sprained ankle was the only major injury, if you'd call it that. We've got a new coach, new personnel, a lot of new players and old players who have to learn a new system. With that in regard, we did pretty well.

I'm pleasantly optimistic with that win and I can't wait for Saturday. Good work coach Saban!

...who needs Feeley?

WHAT? You don't have Donald *no-can-catch* Lee on your Played to grade list? lol

 The Donald actually played alright tonight. Not horrible and not as bad as the camp reports have suggested. He's still 2 steps behind Lorenzo Diamond on my list though.

Good analyzation, but what about Yeremiah Bell? I realize he will probably not be starting come week one but he seemed to be the only starter making plays and being consistently around the ball. And no defensive player who was in the second half should get a good grade minus Glenn and Corey Jenkins.

I thought Yeremiah did alright. The ball didn't really go near him but I was disappointed with the defensive backs as a whole in their getting to the receiver after the catch....something we excelled in last season
