I find the numbers telling:
The Titans and center Kevin Mawae agreed to a four-year, $13 million deal with a $4 million signing bonus
David Givens, signed a five-year, $24 million deal with the Tennessee Titans, includes an $8 million signing bonus.
Culpeppers deal: The Dolphins assumed the $6 million roster bonus, and in addition agreed to give Culpepper $2 million for 2006. The entire seven-year deal is worth $49.5 million with likely-to-be-earned incentives of $1.5 million per season from 2007 to 2012.
Brees deal: six-year, $60 million deal with the New Orleans Saints that included a $8 million signing bonus and a 2006 base salary of $2 million.
The contract includes a $12 million option bonus due next spring and a base salary of $3 million for 2007.
My take:
Mawae: $3 million/year for a 35 y/o center with a bad wing is too much
Givens: $4.5-5 million/year for #2 WR too much (infact $3 million/year too much for #2 WR: see Booker)
Culpeppers cap hit less than Gus's was.
Culpepper cheaper than Brees, and Peppers contract is longer.
Brees may be cut after one year if his arm really is permantly damaged.
