Capers Defense

I think we may see some glimpses of the famous "Blitzburgh" defense. But our defense is much more complicated because we like to switch between the 3-4 and 4-3 alignment like the Pats did in the early Belicheck days.

Saban's defense is uniquely complicated, and Capers is only refining it and adding a few things... with the two of them, we should see a very dangerous 3-4/4-3 hybrid that can blitz heavy or disguise its coverage with the best of them... I think this defense has the ability to be much better than Pitts.

i'm expecting extreemly effective blitzing... it seems the last couple of years that our blitz puts pressure on but gets picked up more offten than not..

What weaknesses are evident for the Dolphins in this type of defense the troubles you?

I would not have noticed...I just ate THREE bolonga sammiches...tomatoe, onion, lettuce and mustard.... mm mmm..carrot cake and milk is next.

an off-season article mentioned that one of the things that endeared Saban to the veterans was insisting the new co-ordinators learn the Dolphin terminology and not vice-versa. That said and clearly under Saban's direction I would expect both co-ordinators to put a bit of their stamp on the team. They will do it however within the Dolphin terminology and especially on the defensive side under Saban's overall plan. Capers knew that when he signed on so expect to see some tweaks and probably a fair amount of blitzing (which we already did a fair amount last season) but not that much change from last year. Not much change from the end of the season that is where the front seven started going on instinct and knowledge of where they should be and what they should do.

Under the direction of Capers will the Dolphins defense remind us and/or resemble the present Steelers defense?

To put it most simply, yes, but it's a little more complicated then that.

Miami is, according to Saban himself, a 3-4 team first and foremost. When Miami plays the 3-4, they play in the same style as Pittsburgh. That means that there will be alot of blitzing, and one of the Defensive Ends(Vonnie Holliday, usually) will spend alot of time shooting a gap or stunting as opposed to reading and reacting in 2-gap style play. New England, for example plays the 3-4 differently in that all 3 of the linemen are playing 2-gap and there is generally less blitzing.

However, the 4-3 is still going to be played alot, and it's doubtful that Miami is going to go completely away from it. Miami likes to line up in a 4-3 defense that is virtually identical in to a 3-4 in terms of positioning and responsibility, just with Jason Taylors hand on the ground.

We'll also see occasional games where Miami ends up playing the old style 4-3 more often then not, with 3 linebackers backed off of the line of scrimmage. Saban seems to like playing this against Tom Brady, who tends to struggle vs. the Wannstedt-era cover 2 man schemes.

Dom Capers really doesnt change anything. He's got plenty of experience running both a 3-4 and 4-3 defense.

I hope Roth, and Channing improve with their 2nd year.

And I hope the new cornerbacks, are better than reggie howard.

Our Defense/Depth look pretty good on paper.
