Defensive coordinator Dom Capers, who joined the Dolphins before the 2006 season, did something Tuesday at training camp that was a first in his time in Miami.

He walked up and spoke into a group of microphones.

"We know this is his first press conference, so you guys be easy on him," joked head coach Cam Cameron, referring to the gag order that former coach Nick Saban placed on his assistants.

"ranked No. 4 in the league in total defense...." and we are BETTER this year?? oy.

I'm a little worried about Capers having full control over the defense. I hope it works out, but this will be the first time in years where he's had total control.

"In years" you're talking about the last two right? Besides with us he's run his defense in CAR, JAX & HOU.
And you shouldn't be worried because he's one of the best.

we've never had problems with the D...why be worried about capers NOW?

It has been proven that defense wins championships and the offense gets all the glory. But just think how psyched everyone would be if this defense ended up being #1 this year and holding everyone to about 10 points/game. That'd be nasty! I really hope that happens and make everyone look like fools.

Yeah...what he said !!

I don't understand the worry. The defense will perform better under Capers than under the heavy thumb of Saban. Caper's defenses always excel. He is one of the best D-coordinators the NFL has ever had. No question about it. As a head coach, it's hard to judge. He has had success and failure. But it's not totally fair to pass judgment. His only two head coaching stints have been with expansion teams. But his lack of overall success does nothing to take away his history of dominating defenses as a coordinator.

It's also a smart move by Cameron to hand the keys over to Capers if he thinks that Capers is better-suited than himself to handle the defense and thus concentrate on what he was brought in to do, which was to take care of the offense.

It's not exactly unprecidented, either. Bill Walsh deferred to George Seifert on defense for years, Ditka famously let Buddy Ryan run the defense with complete autonomy in Chicago (which led to the fight in the Orange Bowl over Ryan stubbornly staying in the 46 instead of putting in extra personnel in the secondary) and Shanahan gave the keys to Greg Robinson during Denver's run in the late 90s. If you're an offensive-minded head coach with a strong defensive coordinator, sometimes the best move you can make is defer to them.

No need to worry, Capers is one of the best. His is a proven coordinator.

I know there has been about 3 replys to your coment but i just had the drop my 2 cents
You are gonna be so happy with Capers and the way he calls plays
he will pressure you to death.
Brady is gonna have Porter barking at him on one side and JT on the other side looking all bugged in the eye and at the snap of the ball neither of the 2 rush and instead Bell/ Allen / and Zack all rush him from the middle of the defense
capers MADE the Blitzberg defense and the 3-4 zone blitz
you'll see
He loves pressure and he keeps the pressure even if you burn him once and hurt us.
That is what good DC do.
most DC get hury and then stop the pressure.
Not Dom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I CAN'T WAIT - We will have a top 2 defense this year.
our secondary is not that good but they also don't need to be becasue they will be in cover 2 and 3 for 90% of the time.
very littile man coverage with Dom.

What worries me is if we improve on the top 5 defense this season, it'll probably mean we will be looking for another D coordinator next year after Capers gets snagged as a HC.

I beleive Capers turned down a couple of head coaching interview oppurtunitie last year, stating that he is happy being a coordinator and thinks that is where he is at his best and feels most comfortable.

When his contract was extended recently he was made one of the highest paid coordinators in the league, and is paid better than a lot of the head coaches around the league.

My Response:

I never said Capers wasn't a ver good D-coordinator, i know he is. I've watched defenses under him. The only reason i said 'worry', which im now going to say is a mistake because apparently it was way to strong a word to use, was because this defense excelled with BOTH Saban and Capers coaching them. I'm hoping Capers knows what he's doing with the secondary, because with our defense, that should be our only concern.

That said, I know Capers is going to do well. Im just hoping our secondary can hold up just in case his blitz-happy packages don't get to the QB in time.
