Since Jim Bates did not get the HC job with Green Bay he decided to leave. I know both Capers and Bates have HC aspirations. I think Bates would be the better fit with us now especially since he was the architect that helped build us and he knows Saban. What do you guys think? I also think it will be a longer time before Bates gets a shot at being a HC.

Capers is a much better D coordinator. It will be a long time before he is considered for head coaching gig again. He's had two shots and hasn't faired well. Also, Capers and Saban have known each other for a long time and worked togetheer for several years and have remained good friends. Their relationship is lot stronger than is Saban and Bates.

I don't think Bates will ever be a HC......the Phins bypassed him and so did the Packers. He didn't even get a nibble from any other team...this says something.

Correction, Bates wants to be a HC really bad, and I think he would go to the college ranks just to be HC SOMEWHERE. As to Capers, he has had his taste of it, and failed more than once. I think He, like MM is ready to be a role player on a team, and I think he would be happy for more than one year just coaching D.

Capers hands down!

Bates is a very good DC. Capers was a better DC. Besides, even tho both have a history with Saban, Capers is a better fit. Why I feel that way is that Saban's expertise is in the secondary. That's his specialty. Saban worked with Mangini at Cleveland briefly and then BB finished his training at NE but until last year, he was the secondary coach, teaching the same schemes and coverage as Saban. Capers specialty is the front seven...the DL and LBs, particularly in the 4-3 scheme and it's nuances. This combination, coupled with the other D coaches we have would be a much better situation for the Fins.

Bates ran Wanny's D to a tee, and that particular D has been found out by the rest of the league. That is why more teams are running the hybrid 3-4/4-3 D that we are now. That is not Bates specialty. Bates has a history here with many of the players as well and that wouldn't be a good fit either.

No matter who, if either is hired, there is a lot of work to be done on the D side of the ball, but it all starts with better players. Unless Saban and Meuller do some magic in FA and the draft, it won't matter who is the DC...

Bates is just not aggressive enough IMO....and when he is its a joke!! We all remember the days of the dynamic dolphins blitz where Zach just runs into a pile of OL....and the qb just stands there for 10 seconds.

i couldn't agree more!! he was good as an interim coach that's about. besides, let's get over this, what about bates campaign. he's not coming back here, case closed!!

If we had any interest at all in having Bates on the defensive staff, don't you think we would've kept him when we had the chance?

Saban and Bates's defensive schemes mix like oil and water, and having Bates on the staff creates the potential for divisions among the players based on past loyalties.

In other words, I think we should probably put all the Bates talk to rest permanently.

How soon people forget that it took half of our salary cap to make the Bates/Wanny/Johnson 43 defense to work.

That's a great point, and what I think you're saying is that the emphasis on having players make plays instead of having the system make plays costs a lot of money. You have to pay the players to make the plays, and they ain't cheap.

And DW and staff got so carried away with that philosophy that they drafted Jamar Fletcher and Eddie Moore instead of offensive players when we already had a solid DB and LB corps at the time. So it cost not only money but draft picks as well.

I think you're right about putting this talk about Bates to rest, but I think the players know who is in charge and would fear taking up sides with anyone but Saban.

Huh? If Saban wanted him he would have kept him. We had gone as far as we could under Bates' D. No to Bates.

Get over this love for Bates thing. He won't be coming back to Miami. If he wanted to stay with Saban, he could have last year. Capers is a way better DC than Bates anyways.
