Carey seems to be a natural guard and although he was a RG
starting out, we have smiley now so he would go to LG. What if the draft went something like Jake Long #1 and someone like Cherilus if he is there at 2a. That would put our lineup from LT to RT as Long, Carey, Satele, Smiley, Cherilus. That seems pretty dominant for a long time and would drive Carey's bargaining chip value down being a guard instead of a LT when we have to work out a contract with him I would think (yeah I know guards are making tons of money now, but LT still has that beat). Thoughts?

i think wed go J L, Carey to LG and BROWN at RT at 57 or 64 if not greco.

The only thing is Cherilus sucked at pass blocking.. Take a look at the tapes.. He also got blown off the ball with the pass rush in the senior bowl practices.

Carey is just a much better RT right now.. I think he can be a pro bowl RT.. So why move him to guard and have an inferior RT when we can just draft a very good guard like Greco or Shuening in round 4, and use the #32 pick for a corner or another position (or BPA)... Or we can draft Rachal with 2b or the third round pick.

why would you want to weaken a position (T) that is so hard to find quality players? If we got lucky and had 2 pro bowl T from out of no where I would consider it.

I can def deal with that too. Problem, and random problem it is, is that Carey will want tackle money if we keep him there (even at RT) when we start negotiating this year with him and if you watch enough tape you might be led to believe that J Long might make a better RT that Carey. At least this year we would be allowed to experiment with Long at LT and see what comes of it in a 'safe' fashion so to speak.

You aren't weakening anything. If we play the right scheme we can hide Long's non-superior athletic talent as Michigan did (fact: almost just like the Broncos zone scheme) with veteran leadership just inside of him (carey). I believe Cherilus will be a very solid RT in the pro level. Even if he isn't we could easily move Carey to RT and cherilus would make an incredible back up.

First of all. ALOT of teams need tackles and O-linemen. 26 of the 32 teams need OL help according to NFL.com.. Cherilus won't even make it to pick 32.. So forget about him.

This is insane. Carey is the only starting Tackle on the roster and you want to move him to guard?

...

If we pick up 2 tackles in the first 2 picks then I see a possibility yes. I realize he is our only starting tackle at the moment, but he has the possibility to be one of the most dominant young guards in the league, why would you deny him that? If an OT worthy of starting for multiple years isn't there than Carey stays at tackle. It is a hypothetical, read the original post before you reply.

I already know the math on this one, but I will let you figure it out. And this is rhetorical so please don't respond to this specifically, but what % of your teams starting players are on the OL? (hint a bigger percentage than QB) Teams will always need OL help with those kind of numbers. Doesn't mean that is their highest need. EX: The Patriots need major help on the O-line after being exposed in the SB for their veteran savvy instead of their youthful skill, but the likelihood of them drafting an OT is slim in the first. catch the drift?

Why would we take a guy who just proved he can play a very solid Lt and move him inside to start a rookie?

Definately not the worst idea. I do think Carey would be a better guard , not a big fan of Cherilus though. He was pretty bad this season for BC. Ryan basically had no help on this team and thats why I'm a big fan of Ryan. I have never seen a Qb do so much with so little. I do like the idea of drafting two olinemen that early though. IMO Jake Long is the closest to a sure thing early in the draft and is the only player that much better than the rest of his position. Clady is a big drop off, Long to Ghoulston is not that huge, Ryan to Brohm not so huge.

Carey is better than all of those players in 2009. That's a silly line-up to me. I don't see why he would be moved to a position that he has hardly played in favour of putting a rookie in some of his more favoured positions. Yes, he played guard in college, but he has played tackle throughout his pro career. He is a tackle.
