Dolphins | Contract Talks For Carey Begin - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 29 Jun 2004 08:18:35 -0700

The Miami Herald reports the Miami Dolphins have opened preliminary talks on a contract for rookie OT Vernon Carey. WHile both sides have exchanged offers, serious discussions are expected to begin after the July 4 weekend.

Its a start :D

There hasnt been any reports about our other draft picks signing.

Its no question tht hell be on the team soon, so theres not much to tlk bout on this thread.

Hopefully we can get him signed before training camp. I remember last year that Speilman tried to get players to sign for more years than most rookies drafted in their respected rounds, so if he tries to push our late round picks to sign for more years, we could be in trouble. I wonder if Speilman will try to get Carey to sign for more than 5 years.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. They put 5 years on Moore last year and he was a second round pick. Especially if Carey is the first to dig into the rookie pool money. First come first served.
That is what the draft picks were told last year. I expect it to be the same this year.

I highly doubt Carey will get more than a 5-year deal. As much as Spielman would like to, Carey's agent won't let it hapeen IMO.

Also, the trend now is to sign 2nd rounders to 5-year deals, 3rd-5th rounders to 4-year deals, and 6th-7th rounders to 3-year deals. Of course there are exceptions, but generally that's how the deals are going down.

I say that Carey will get a 6 year contract.

Some are considering the idea of a Samuels/Ogun swap. Then asking Washington to throw in (I think this was said) a 2nd rounder. Samuels had a pretty $hitty year last season didn't he? Just putting this out there.

I would have thought he was already signed since he's been to all the mini camps.

I say 6 years with heavy incentives and escalators and an option out year on the 6th.

Bigger question is how big his signing bonus will be. What was the bonus for the slot last year?
