TEXAS (March 23rd) senior running back CEDRIC BENSON ran between 4.58 and 4.65 in the 40... some had as fast as 4.55, others as slow as 4.68... here's a breakdown of his 40's... he was whistled to stop, as he had a rolling start on his first attempt, slipped on his second attempt, so his times came on his 3rd and 4th attempts... 4.21/4.40 short shuttle... 7.48/7.52 three-cone... 33" vertical... also did 21 reps of 225 pounds, but some recorded only 18 of those, as he failed to lockout... weighed in at 5106, 225 pounds... his positional drills were very good, but not great... looked best with the ball in his hands... making his cuts and running out most/all of his runs... caught passes well, but was a little slower than normal in terms of his quickness/footwork... did not mention or complain about any type of injury... was also not overweight or out of shape... he's a power runner with average 40-speed, but very good "Game Day" speed on the field... quick to hole... very good vision... physical runner... good, but not great hands... Miami (Nick Saban), Chicago (Jerry Angelo) were two of the teams that did not have a very important evaluator in attendance for this workout because they were still out in Hawaii at the NFL Owner's meeting... Benson spent about 10 minutes with Miami RB coach Bobby Williams after the workout...

For comparison purposes:

Cadillac Williams: COMBINE: 4.5 in the 40-yard dash … 2.63 20-yard dash … 1.59 10-yard dash … 4.15 20-yard shuttle … 11.46 60-yard shuttle … 6.94 three-cone drill … 35½-inch vertical jump. … 9-foot-10 broad jump … Bench-pressed 225 pounds 19 times … 30 5/8-inch arm length … 8¼-inch hands.

Ronnie Brown: Combine: 4.43 in the 40-yard dash … 2.57 20-yard dash … 1.54 10-yard dash … 4.08 20-yard shuttle … 7.10 three-cone drill … 34-inch vertical jump … 9-foot-9 broad jump … Bench pressed 225 pounds 18 times … 31 5/8-inch arm length … 9 5/8-inch hands.

Cedric Benson: Combine: Player declined to participate in agility tests at the Combines … 32-inch arm length … 9 1/8-inch hands.

i thought his shuttle and cone drills were basically discarded cause of wet conditions or some ****...

You'll notice that there are no shuttle times. That's because the surface they ran on was slippery and the times weren't indicative of what the players could run. So, there were no times for the shuttles.

thats from nfl.com

I hope, for Benson's sake, that the shuttles are understood to be performed in poor conditions. The 4.4 short shuttle is very poor for a RB that is supposed to be one of the top 5 in his class.

I could care less what #'s in a manufactured environment are, show me production on a real football field, and Cedric Benson has done just that. Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown were not good enough to beat each other out for the job and so everything's based on "potential" I'd rather have the guy who did it from one Saturday to the next. Only Benson has proven he can take an NFL workload.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. Living out in austin I had the opportunity to see Bensen play and he "disappears" in big games. Sure he looks great against the scrub teams, who wouldn't. Look at his production in big games, UT-OU and the Rosebowl. In the NFL, every week is a big game.

They said Ricky was slow as well. Darn if anybody could catch him after he EXPLODED into the secondary.

For the record I am not completely sold on any of the 3 RB's. All 3 are quite good, but with each I have a concern or two.

Who said Ricky was slow?

Just about everyone from the Saints organization. Also part of the reason James was taken ahead of him in the draft.

According to the OFFICIAL, electronically timed sensors at the combine, both Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown ran 4.48 in the 40. The fact that there is a .07 spread between Caddilac's and Ronnie's time merely leads me to disregard all of the times put forward.

Benson seems as if he may be a head-case ..... hmmmm .... a head-case from Texas ...... where have I heard that before?!!

:D

That's one of the DUMBEST arguements i have read in awhile LMAO. They weren't good enough to beat each other out?? ROFL.

The Saints were using Ricky at 245 pounds also. When Ricky was drafted the only question about him was his fumbling, not his speed. He didn't have blazing speed but it wasn't a question (it's not like he was running in the 4.6 area).
