EDMONTON - Jerome Messam is taking his talents to South Beach.

A breakthrough season with the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos has led to the talented running back signing a deal with the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League.

Eskimos general manager Eric Tillman confirmed the news late Saturday night.

“Yes, it’s true. Jeff Ireland (Dolphins general manager) phoned me late afternoon and said they had decided to offer Jerome a contract, but their proposal would not include a signing bonus,” Tillman said.

“We weren’t positive that proposal would be accepted, but in the past couple of hours, Darren Gill, Jerome’s agent, confirmed they had discussed the situation and would be accepting the offer from Miami.

Gotta say, I didn't see this one coming at all.

Messam is a big guy with a good burst and quickness for a man his size. He's a pretty good receiver out of the backfield too. Having said that, I can't foresee him having much of an impact here. He runs too upright and has only average power for someone his size. And while he's a great Canadian running back (and one could argue he's actually only the third best Canadian running back in the CFL), he's only average as far as overall NFL talent goes. I'd also be a bit worried about his head space since he really buggered up his chance with his first CFL team due to his off field problems.

I think it's good we didn't spend any money on him - and who knows, maybe he'll pleasantly surprise in training camp.

runs a little high ey?

Well yeah...he's 6'3" 245....we are not talking about a midget like Ray Rice here. It sounds like he has gotten into a lot of trouble, wasn't academically eligible to play college ball...ended up at some NAIA school called Graceland in Iowa and has bounced around. Hopefully he will get his personal life together and make the most of things. Could be a diamond in the rough like Cameron Wake.

I have learned my lesson with Canadian imports. Messam will have to prove it on the field & the NFL is not the CFL. So we will see, looks like a good signing, but CFLers are always hard to judge and he will have strong competition in camp. He does have ST experience and that could help him, we'll see.

Just to be clear here, if there's one thing us Canucks like even more than when a CFLer makes the NFL, it's when an actual Canadian-born player makes it in the NFL. That's what Messam is.

I know most FinHeaven-mates don't give a rat's orifice where a player comes from, but we Canadians think it's special...

he looks like he has good burst for a guy his size. looks faster than dt. who knows anything can happen. can we lightning strike twice and we get two good cflers? who knows

maybe he works out, ala michael bush. who knows?
he does kinda remind me of bush with the way he runs. but mike is alot more physical, and has alot more power. trust me i played with bush at louisville, and im a lb
