Chad Henne played well today, but the true indicator of whether he is the guy for us or not is whether or not he improves over the course of the season. To track his improvement, I feel we must rate his performance each week in various categories. I will track the stats in excel and keep graphs showing his progress. He will have good games and bad ones, but at the end of the year we hope to see progression overall and in most categories. There will be individual things to rate such as throw accuracy, footwork, and then there will be a category for overall where I will take a percentage of each subcategory and compile one graph that really shows how our QB has hopefully progressed.
So Fin Fans.. rate Henne in each of the following categories…

Throw Accuracy = 1-10
Pocket Awareness = 1-10
Footwork = 1-10
Vision (ability to find the open receiver) = 1-10
General Decision making = 1-10
Big Plays = 1-10
Look off Safeties = 1-10

Since it’s the first week I am open to different categories and ideas, I just think it’s a good idea to use numbers to track his progression along with subjectivity.

Accuracy: 7

Hit the checkdowns every time, got most of the mid range routes, needs to develop accuracy on deeper routes. It could just be he didn't have timing down in game speed

Pocket Awareness: 4

Once the bills started getting pressure towards the end of the game he paniced. I thought this was his worst attribute.

Footwork: 9

Not going to say perfect since this was his first start but i didnt notice any real issues there but at this point there has to be room to improve.

Vision: 5

I heard the commentators say a few times there was a receiver running open in the middle of the field and that he cant lock on to one guy. Maybe With the lack of his deep ball accuracy today he didnt want to throw it long?!?

Decisions: 8

Again not going to say perfect but did hit the check downs a little more than necessary IMO. Its his first start, he needs confidence, I understand so from that perspective he did pretty good.

Big plays: 6

Converted some 3rd downs but that was about it. The running game was the focal point and that should get most of the credit.

Look offs:6

A few replays I noticed he did this a few times but then again he was missing open receivers today as well. From all the talk about him staring down receivers in the offseason and from michigan I thought he made some strides today.

Its hard to rate a game like this seeing it was his first start and the running game was so good there wasn't a pressing need to see what Henne could do..

accuracy: 6 (above average)
awareness: 5
footwork: n/a
vision: 4
decisions: 7-8
big play: 6 (missed on a couple plays, but was able to get standard 3rd down plays)
look off: n/a

Throw Accuracy = 6.. he hit the short throws, was off on some mid to long
Pocket Awareness = 3, did alright but when the blitz came he didnt avoid it and caused a few sacks himself.
Footwork = 7, he still looks awkward at times out there, he gets out from the center pretty fast and sets his feet to throw as soon as he takes his drop. Looks good just needs cleaned up a bit.
Vision (ability to find the open receiver) = 4, he often threw to the first guy he looked at and if it wasnt there he took off.
General Decision making = 7, he took care of the ball.. didnt turn it over, turned bad plays (no open recievers) into good ones with his legs.
Big Plays = 4, made some intermediate range throws but did not hit the mark going deep. Kept his cool on third downs and converted them like the other chad.
Look off Safeties = 6, Its hard to say after only watching once, but I did not see safeties breaking up early on too many of his passes.

Keep the ratings coming.. the more people that weigh in the more reliable our statistics will be.

The flaw in this plan of evaluation is that not all opposing teams are equal. Some are much better than the Bills and some are worse.

Right, thats why I will be making a graph of his progress so we can see the overall trend, if you look at it game to game you wont see anything, if you look at the overall trend though, we should see some progression, or maybe not.
