Chad Johnson is a funny dude, and baller in practice

Never thought I would say this, but after watching the premiere of Hard Knocks, he may be my new favorite player.

People may not like his attitude, but it's just Chad being Chad without some of the drama that plagued him earlier in his career. He's gotten over all the Ocho-cinco me first attitude and is finally getting back to what made him a very good receiver in Cincinnati. I'm digging his new-found humility. I could definitely see him having a break-out season even at the ripe old age of 34. Maybe it's the fact that he's home or him knowing that he could be on his last chance in the NFL, but Chad is definitely ready to make some noise in the NFL again.
 
Another poster (I forget who, sorry) pointed out something really insightful in another thread which really became apparent in the HK premiere - Chad is emotionally needy. He's looking for acceptance from his HC in a father-figure sort of way, and that allows him to thrive. He's actually a really emotionally transparent guy who, underneath his antics and deadpan, speaks from the heart. When Philbin had that little conversation with Chad, you could almost see Chad a little hurt when he tried to explain that he was just keeping it loose. Philbin responded in a slightly patronizing way, like "yeah yeah I know your deal" and you could see the sting in Chad's face.

I don't want Chad to be a distraction as I'm more of a fan of the Phins than any one player, but while he's a Phin, I hope he can be managed in a way that is most beneficial to his emotional well-being and therefore, his play.

Chad Johnson is like the Hawkeye Pierce of football, excellent at his job but goofball jokester about everything else. I totally get that. All the Frank Burn's out there just can't take the fact that he doesn't fall into the mold of what THEY think a professional athelete should be.

He doesn't slack off, he doesn't rip other players or cause discontent in the locker room, he doesn't get in trouble off the field, and doesn't care what you think. But because he's got a big personality and doesn't act like Jerry Rice, people wanna hate.

I got news for you haters, if it wasn't for non-conformists who were excellent at what they do, America probably wouldn't exist today. Chad Johnson is the epitome of American exceptionalism and individualism. As long as he produces on the field and doesn't beat his wife, or drive drunk, or shoot himself or a friend outside a bar at 4am, why the frak would anyone complain...?

I'd like to think I'm a good observer of the subtleties of human behavior, but it's probably also why I have no friends. :idk:
 
idk, it's probably just me but i think Philbin made too much out of Chad saying a few bad words in his press conference. Its not like he was sitting up there ripping the team or complaining or anyting like that. Chad's cursing seemed pretty harmless to me. I just don't think it was worth the "he either needs to fall in line or not" comment Philbin made during Hard Knocks. You save those type of comments for the bigger issues that the players cause. You kinda lose the effect of the statement if you use it on something this insignificant. Plus is conversation with Chad just seemed like he wasn't really interested in what Chad had to say. It just came off as a little too strict- kinda in a grandfatherly sort of way. :idk: But hey, thats just my 2 cents

I like Philbin a lot, but that situation just kinda sat wrong with me.
 
Yeah, and I just loved when he walked into that meeting uninvited and just wasted a few minutes of everyone's time...that was great!...NOT.

That was completely unprofessional. His antics are disrupting the team...whether the folks here admit it or not.
 
I think Philbin was obligated to do that after Chad walked into the meeting room and everything.

Otherwie things might start to get out of hand pretty quick.

Chad is funny as hell sometimes. When they caught him walking out of the building going on break and he told the guy that he was going to get arrested it cracked me up completely.

It would be REALLY funny to see his cute new wife smack him upside the head. :clapping:

Yes that 30 seconds will completely destroy the team. SMH... The meeting hadn't even started yet. There's nothing to "admit" other than you are completely overreacting.

He was trying to sit in on a coaches meeting, and it looked like he assumed it was a film study meeting (which coaches do without players quite often) but he didn't realize it was a personnel discussion meeting so he left. Seriously, it's like you're going out of your way to be a stick in the mud. Maybe drop preconceived notion you have of Chad and just open for what it is. Seriously, he's as much of a distraction as Soliai for dying the rookies' hair. Grow up.
 
I think a lot of that, like sitting in on the meeting, is showboating for the HBO cameras. I don't believe for a second he would drop in on a coaches meeting if he didn't know that HBO cameras would be in there...
