"They drafted Chad to be a starting quarterback," Pennington said.
He wasn't speaking in the third person while standing on the back fields of Miami's practice facility Tuesday. For Pennington to speak in the third person would be startlingly out of character. It would be comedic.
No, he was talking about the other Chad - Henne - to whom Pennington served as a mentor last season while also finding time to lead the Dolphins to a stunning 11-5 record and into the playoffs as AFC East champions. Pennington, in other words, gave Miami everything it could have expected to get from him when he landed in the Dolphins' lap last summer as a free-agent signee.
He taught an impressionable and eager-to-learn rookie more than just the ropes. Pennington taught Henne, who arrived pretty well-schooled out of Michigan, how to think and act and work like an NFL quarterback. That's invaluable stuff, as Henne, lessons absorbed, has made sure to say time and time again.
Oh, and Pennington was good. He was real good.
