I wonder what chad penningtons trade value is after coming off his best season in the nfl.Would you take a number 2 for him and hand the reins over to henne a year early?I think this would be a wise move because we are not going too the superbowl this year anyway. The phins have way to many holes to fill and I would like henne to have a year under his belt so we can make a serious push in 2010.If we play pennington this year we get nothing in return next year because his contract is up.Gobble up are all the draft picks we can get so we can get some playmakers in the draft.
We finally have some stability at quarterback and you want to trade Pennington away? Pennington was a gift from above last August, helped this team make the greatest turnaround in NFL history while playing at a Pro Bowl level(snubbed for the likes of Favre and Collins).
While I agree that Henne is the future and that Pennington is likely the starter for one more year, he is way to valuable to give away even for a second round pick. His knowledge for the game is a great tool for Henne to use as he continues to make the transition from the college game to the pros. It is like having a second QB coach on the team.
Quarterback is actually one position on this team that if nothing is done, it is still a strong unit. If you trade Pennington away, you open up a world of huge questions. That leaves you with just Henne and Beck. Henne, who displayed some great moments last preseason and in his limited time against the Cardinals, may not be 100% ready to take over the starting job. I personally think he would be able to handle it, but what if he isn't ready? John Beck seems to just need a change of scenery and probably doesn't have a long term future.
There is NO WAY Pennington is traded this offseason. He is the QB entering the 09' season and Henne will likely have to wait his turn. He will get his shot, but Pennington has earned the right to at least be the starter at the start of next season.
As for your "we are not going too the superbowl this year anyway" comment. What makes you think that? People last year at this time were saying "we are not going too the playoffs this year anyway". We went from 1-15 with the first overall draft pick to 11-5 and AFC East Champions. Yes we have holes, but if we can make the jump from a one win team to an eleven win team, there is no reason why we couldn't go to the Super Bowl. Not saying we will, but you can never say never.
