chances of marlins to newjersey?

just heard that on espn theres a possibility the fish might move to nj..do you think it can happen?
 
I see the Fish ending up in Portland or Las Vegas myself.
 
Don't see it. Portland will put on a full-court press for them, with Paul Allen bankrolling the purchase and whatever stadium upgrades are necessary.

Portland is the only city in the US that went ahead and built a new baseball stadium for a prospective team, and it's sitting there just waiting for the first pitch to be thrown.

Vegas...I don't think MLB wants to be the first pro sports league to put a team in Vegas. I think that'll be the NBA.
 
Well, there has been talk about a MLB team in the Meadowlands for years. But I believe the Mets and Yanks would have to approve that move.

But with the Nets going to Brooklyn, and the Devils to Newark (also the Metrostars), they could use a team.

It's doubtful, but I would not rule it out.
 
No way the Marlins go to New Jeresy. Both the Yankees and Mets won't allow it. Many think Portland, Oregon is the favorite.
 
Better chance they stay here. All it takes is one rich person to write a check or a bunch of politicians to finally come to their senses and realize that they either need a stadium or no team. Option 1 sounds nice to me...I'll be writing a column about all this soon enough, as soon as the initial pain wears away.

And for all of you who think I'm nuts, Greg Cote writes otherwise. My favorite line? "You cannot (or at least should not) blame Loria in all of this. He was -- is -- willing to put up $212 million of his own money, up front and in annual rent, toward a proposed $385 million cost for a new stadium. He also is willing (and this is not standard procedure) to cover all overrun costs. That's major, especially when you consider the public is paying millions in overrun costs for the Performing Arts Center."

Read it and weep, South Floridians who would rather have your tax dollars go towards education and health care. They're not going for that. There is money earmarked for the entertainment sector, and this should be part of it.
 
I could see the Marlins in Vegas...they have a Triple AAA team there that is nicknamed the 51's after Area 51, and they have a cool alien as their logo....Bud could care less about gambling as the Commish....he winks at steroids so gambling would not be a concern either.

That's what cracks me up about the people that claim to oppose stadium and other public works projects on the basis of not wanting their tax dollars spent.

I always ask those people, "When's the last time your local government gave you back even a penny on your property taxes or sales taxes, despite all the projects you've managed to have killed?" And you know what? The answer is always, "ZERO!"

You know why? Because no matter what you say, the government is gonna find something - ANYTHING - on which to spend your tax dollars. And it usually ends up being some crap you never get to see, or use, or otherwise get the benefit of.

So why not have them spend it on something that at least you can see, and use, and enjoy? Every time I see a grass-roots effort to stop the building of a sports stadium, I think it is the greatest waste of time and effort. These people, the obstructionists among us, are the short-sighted fools that can't see the forest for the trees.

Although I disagree with you, this is a very good point. As between a sports stadium and some other pissant expenditute, I'd rather see money spent on a stadium, of which I'd at least get the benefit.

Personally, I'm opposed to the public funding for stadiums because there's usually an additional charge of some kind that pays for it, i.e. an increase in sales or property taxes. It's seldom actually part and parcel of a legislature's budget for a given fiscal year. Moreover, there's very little evidence that a new stadium will aid a local economy in any significant way. Finally, I personally resent the idea that a billionaire owner can basically hold a community hostage with a request for a new stadium under the guise of "needing to stay competitive", when in fact it's a thinly veiled excuse to jack up prices for parking, tickets and concessions. Every few years we hear "they need a new stadium to stay competitive". Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cincinnati and Milwaukee all built wonderful, shiny new stadiums in the last few years. Has this enchanced their competitive stature in any meaningful way? Of course not. Has playing in outdated Fenway Park hurt the Red Sox? No. Have the ancient (by our standards) Yankee Stadium, Wrigley Field, Dodger Stadium and Busch Stadium harmed their residents at all? No.

Off my soapbox and onto the original message: no one's moving to New Jersey. The Mets and Yankees would (rightfully) pitch a fit and quash the move. Look at how long it took MLB to get back to Washington, a clear and established baseball market, and that was with just one owner griping.

Portland or Charlotte will get the next MLB team. Whether that's the Marlins is anyone's guess. Here's the thing: baseball in Miami SHOULD work. There's a very large Hispanic population, and they historically are big baseball fans. It's a big city with a sufficient corporate presence. But the franchise has been such a joke that I'm not sure they can be taken seriously; they may have poisoned the area for baseball.

MikeO has said this before, and it bears repeating: the Marlins claim "small market" status whenever it happens to suit them. They tore their team apart immediately after winning the 97 World Series and now are in the process of doing the same, 2 years after winning the 03 Series. How do you overcome that? How could fans trust a franchise like that? If the Mets pulled that crap, I'd probably stop caring about baseball. And I know for a fact I've been a Mets fan longer than anyone on planet Earth has been a Marlins fan.

YEP YEP YEP! They claim "small market" when they want to. But will also claim "BIG MARKET" when it suits them. Less than 365 days ago the Marlins signed Carlos Delgado to a huge contract. Now, less than 365 days later they can't afford him? LOL, its a joke :rofl3:

Bottom line, they gave Delgado huge money hoping it would help them land a new stadium. It didn't. Now they are getting rid of him and everyone else, build up the farm system. Put the FOR SALE sign on the team, sell a young team loaded with farm system talent (which means no big player contracts a new owner is stuck with, except maybe 1 or 2) and move the team to Vegas or wherever.

The bottom line is the Marlins owners SUCK. The fanbase in general in South Florida when it comes to baseball SUCKS. The weather in South Florida SUCKS for baseball. It is a bad mix. Yes they have won 2 world series championships and god bless them. But they have burned the fans so much that nobody cares about those trophys except a small minority.
