Clay, a sixth-round pick out of Tulsa, might normally be freaking out from this identity crisis had he not been dealing with these questions throughout his career. Is he a tight end? A fullback? A blocker? A runner? A receiver?
Put simply, he’s the future — a hybrid weapon on offense who can line up anywhere from the backfield to the slot. As a result, he’s been cramming into the early mornings lately to make sure he understands as many of his potential positions as possible.
Clay’s position, which could ultimately replace the fullback, is called an H-back. And actually, it isn’t a new position at all. You’ve heard it used to reference players like Dallas Clark and Chris Cooley, even if neither one is quite as pure of an H-back as players such as Clay or Hernandez. Both of the latter could be taking this role to new places.
