Polite has been a good soldier since coming to Miami in 2008. He’s a quiet leader in the locker room, played in all 32 games the past two years, was near automatic on short-yardage runs (converting 44-of-46) and always is a presence at the Dolphins’ community events.
Polite’s time in Miami, though, could be coming to an end. Forget the $1.35 million salary he’s due, and the fact that he really struggled as a lead blocker in 2010 (ranked 29th out of 30 fullbacks by Pro Football Focus).
He just might not have a role in the Brian Daboll’s new offense. Also seen in Wednesday’s practice clip shown on Total Access was a shot of rookie H-back Charles Clay taking snaps with the first-team offense. Clay, a hybrid fullback/tight end, is the future of the Dolphins’ offense. Polite, a traditional smash-mouth fullback, is not.
“I don’t want to call them a dying breed, but they really are,” Sparano said of the fullback position.
