A fullback/tight end hybrid, Clay caught 16 of 25 targets for 233 yards and three touchdowns. That works out to a sparkling 62.1 percent DVOA rating, which would rank as the highest for any running back or tight end with a minimum of 25 receptions. (Our DVOA ratings are defined here.) He had some really long catches for a fullback, with five receptions on balls thrown more than 15 yards through the air plus a 20-yard gain on a DPI. If the Dolphins decide that Anthony Fasano's salary isn't worth carrying on their payroll, Clay will be an even more valuable asset, helping to fill-in until rookie Michael Egnew is ready to take over as the No. 1 tight end.

Is my homerness talking when I consider adding this guy to my Fantasy squad? I currently have Witten and Gates. Still tempting.

Ive read too many posts from too many smart people on FinHeaven that ESPN certainly hates the Miami Dolphins.

Pretty sure the ESPN complaint is mostly about James Walker and his poor coverage of the team. His reporting is very bad and even said yesterday that Miami had yet to sign their second round pick, even though Martin had signed in May. Also I am sure people who complain about certain articles or TV spots are complaining about the people themselves and not necessarily the company they work for. Adam Schein is a moron and so is Alex Marvez, but that doesn't mean Fox Sports as a company is against Miami or views them badly, it is the individual. This is what those smart people you referred to are talking about.
 
Nubs, I think the biggest misconception comes from people that just take any negative comment and run with it. Not everyone is going to say things that are all peachy all of the time.

Although I will say, there is an overwhelming amount of coverage on the Jets/Pats on Sportscenter. Probably due to the location of the ESPN studios.
 
I could care less what the media says bad or good.
I just hope Clay continues to develop and build from last season.

Exactly. The problem is people will whine about how ESPN or such and such writer disses the Fins and they suck. Then that same company or writer puts out something positive and everyone is like "oh I like this guy what a great article". Seriously, ESPN typically sucks at coverage...just because this is a positive article doesn't change that.
 
I'm glad someone broke this down because I remembered him really making a impact running routes from the fullback position. Very long routes for a fullback which I think surprised anyone trying to cover him. No one expects a fullback to run 15 yard routes.
 
This makes sense. He seemed to be in the right place at the right time when he had the opportunity, and showed exceptional hands. Moore liked him a lot. If Garrard wins the job then it will be interesting to see if he establishes the same rapport. I love the idea of Bush out wide and Clay in the seam.
 
Clay is a stud and they really need to feature him more in this new offense.
 
Anthony Fasano is not going to be cut. It's not happening. I'd put that one out of your minds.

But Clay is intriguing. Four of his 16 catches were for 29-30+ yards. Plus another 22 yarder, a 21 yarder, and a 20 yard DPI flag he drew. That kind of stuff interests me. You're trying to figure out potential for a guy with limited opportunities. Having 1.5 yards per pass snap is pretty good, for a rookie tight end. But when it involves 14.6 yards per reception and 10.5 yards per attempt...that's even more interesting. It's the kind of thing that earns him more snaps, and a bigger footprint on the offense during the snaps he does get.

Even more intriguing is that his worst game was probably the one he had to replace Fasano in against NE. He said it was the first time he's played a true TE position ever, and his "head was spinning". Let's say the Dolphins take that into account and try and streamline his responsibilities to what he's good at. In the games outside that NE game he averaged 1.9 yards per pass play, 15.5 yards per catch and 12.0 yards per pass attempt.

The last time the Packers really had a situation similar to this was probably 2009 when they had Donald Lee (an all-around guy not unlike Fasano) and Jermichael Finley. That year during the games in which they played together, Finley had 334 pass snaps and Lee has 274 pass snaps. Lee had 616 total snaps to Finley's 574 so Lee still got more reps just not necessarily more pass reps. I don't think Clay's pass reps will outreach Fasano's so let's take those reps and make them 304/304 instead of 334/274. That would put each at 304 out of 577 pass reps. In Miami that would've translated to 300 pass snaps each for Fasano and Clay. That would translate to 47 attempts, 34 catches and 527 yards for Charles Clay...just based on increased playing time and not even figuring in increased skill.

Upside to that would be increased skill, and increased TE reliance in the offense period since this offense doesn't have the receivers the Packers did even back in 2009.
 
Well, we certainly will see alot of 2 TE formations this year and some 3! Cus the man said so.

If Yeatman shows in preseason and can block he kicks Masturd to the curb.

But Egnew, Clay, and Fasano are really intriguing here as the entire dolphan world worries about our WR's, I think you should start thinking outside the box a little here with Philbin. week to week, day to day. Man adjusts his game.
