Charles Clay on the Joe Rose show

Interesting to hear that (a) Clay got married in the offseason - settling down (b) he responds immediately when he gets a message from Tannehill because it means he wants to practice and is looking for someone to catch the ball (c) describe Ryan as extremely accurate thrower and very precise how he wants the routes to be run (d) his close buddy on the team is Daniel Thomas (he might be looking for a new close buddy if/when DT gets cut).

Thanks for the heads up. I like to listen to Dolphin related podcasts on the way to work. :-)

Yea they came in the same draft class and probably roomed together plus they were both single. If we draft a RB i think DT's days are numbered. If not he'll be 3rd man up and i can live with that. Shame we moved up in the 2nd round for this guy.

i like DT. he is not a great running back, but he'll play hurt and produce when his number is called (see pittsburgh, 2013). i wouldn't want to rely on him as our starter, but i like having him on the team.

Concerning Clay .... wonder how he would do if put in a TE role full time inst e ad of H-back? Can't help but think of him being used like Shannon Sharpe was because of his size, speed, and toughness. Anyone have opinions?

Joe Rose is so freaking loud. I literally have to turn the volume down and then back up when he's done talking. I can't imagine what him yelling sounds like.

The only difference is Clay mostly lines up in the back field and occasionally get a carry or is used as the lead blocker. Lots of TE's move around and can end up anywhere when the balls snapped so the H back designation is really irrelevent on our roster. Maybe some guys usually line up next to a tackle like Sims and mostly block but most move around and can end up in the backfield . Even Egnew ended up as a lead blocker on a few plays. This is especially true when we carry no fullback on the roster.
At least that's the way I see it.
Sharpe was just a big receiver that they slotted at the tight end position like Vernon Davis at San Fran to create mismatches.

This. My thinking is what if we used Clay this way? IMO he may become a force.

He'd probably be very good but Clay can do much more so why limit him ? In college he ran the ball a lot of time and even played QB in their wildcat formations.
Ideally we leave Clay at H back and get another TE to do the things those other guys do.

Here's the run down on Clay last year. He played 868 snaps. He pass blocked on 103 of these, giving up 0 sacks, 1 hit, and 3 hurries, which is good, and did well on screen blocks On run blocking, he had 278 snaps, and was horrible at #50.

Clay ran 468 pass routes, and was in the slay 238 times (50%) catching 26 for 324 yards and 3 TD's. In 2012, he was in the slot 54% but, on much fewer snaps.

some of my favorite plays last year were clay catching the ball and abusing multiple defenders before scoring or being brought down. even in my wildest dreams of him developing into an excellent player, i never envisioned him doing that on the regular.
