This is a guy that I would target in FA.
He's 290 lbs and would be able to fit in at DE in a 3-4 perfectly.

Year Team G Total Tkl Ast Sacks
2002 16 37 30.0 7 7
2003 16 57 46.0 11 10
2004 16 78 65.0 13 10.5
2005 16 62 44.0 18 2.5
2006 16 64 49.0 15 6

He's 28, and had a couple down years, which is good and bad. Good cus he might test the market and could be had at a decent price. Bad cus he could be on the decline. But Im of the philosophy that big line guys that can play are priceless. With Holiday and Carter getting up there, Grant would be great FA pick-up with a few less miles and double digit sack potential.

The Saints are working on a new deal for Grant. They are $28 million under the cap so money isn't a problem. Last report from the Saints FO was they were "optimistic" a deal was going to be worked out (the Saints FO almost never puts out positive news about ongoing player negotiations. The usual is - "the two sides are miles apart..."). So a deal must be close and word has it if they can't get it done before FA starts they'll tag him.....

Build through the draft, this guy does not look like someone we need.

Agreed. I wouldn't touch Briggs, Thomas, Clements, etc. But Grant seems a viable option. It would be foolish to say build through the draft and never touch FAs. A wise FA pickup here and there is warranted.

Yup, I would be surprised if NO lets him go. The only hope is if they feel his production has slipped enough for him to not merit the franchise tag and he choses to look elsewhere. Kinda makes you wonder if any FA out there is worth a crap if their own team lets em walk.

id honestly much rather wait to see if James Hall get cut...he'd be a good pickup at DE for us and it wouldnt effect our chances to get comp picks next year

interestingly enough i dont know if you guys remember but one of the first round picks we traded to the saints was used to get charles grant...

I really want to see what we have in all of our young D linemen. I hope Capers puts more time & effort into throwing the pups out there like Vickerson, Evans and the Wright Bros (if Manny gets his mind right). We already know what Roth brings because he gets better and better w/ each snap. As far as Grant goes, I wouldn't spend the FA $ on him.

I agree with you that we should stay away from Briggs, Thomas and Clements, but I'd prefer we don't sign Charles Grant either. I'm not sure how much he will cost considering he has had some very good years and some dissapointing years as well, but I think it would be too much. I'd much prefer us taking Gaines Adams or Jamaal Anderson to be our pass rushing threats if one of them were still available. Jason Taylor is still effective and Matt Roth needs to see the field. I think the money could be better spent elsewhere. I'd say wait until we are legitimate contenders to start adding the missing pieces via free agency.

Comp picks? And who on the Phins right now would get us a comp pick? Vonnie Holliday? Maybe a 7th. In other words, 1st crack at the FA rookies. James Hall might be a nice pick-up, but letting a comp pick dictate you FA accomplishments (especially when all you have is Vonnie Holliday), is rediculous.

Thats fine. I definetly would not break the bank in going after Grant. But of the FA's available, he is the only one with value. I would pursue and see what I could come up with. Anytime a big man with his tools becomes available, you check it out.

This guy is definatly a hell of a player but he plays the same position as Matt roth and Carter. There is already enough money on our team invested there so i doubt we even look at him in free agency.

Holliday would get fetch far more than a 7th.

I can assure you that there are several FAs out there that are very valuable players. Teams are limited by a thing called the Salary Cap.

A Thomas, even at his price, has a helluva' more value than Grant. Grant doesn't show up every game, and he's not the best lineman against the run.
Pass on Grant. Easy decision really.
