Charley Casserly and Gil Brandt: Ireland in the upper echelon of GMs

The one thing i remind myself about Ireland, is altho he may have been clear of Parcell's at certain points, the imprint of all he has been taught is not something easily shaken off. I give credit to Ireland for re-inventing himself and applying the new age of the NFL away from the bigger is better blueprint that he was fed on.

Funny, I remember reading that we need to give everything "time to develop," etc., yet it only takes one good draft to make him one of the best GMs to ever walk the face of the earth (judging from this and other threads). Interesting...

He had one very good draft. It's a good start towards becoming a decent GM (which is a prerequisite to becoming a good GM, etc.). Now let's see if he can start filling talent voids that he creates by failing to resign players or replace them with talent even close to the level that he lets go.

He did well in one draft. The other was mediocre as of now. We'll see if Gates lives up the tremendous amount of hype he's been getting for a guy that has 2 catches. He's on the right track though.

Last year's draft has a tremendous amount of potential. Pouncey is already on his way to becoming a stud center. Thomas struggled with injuries last year, but certainly has the potential to become a full time starter.

Gates has a lot of hype, but as you mentioned hasn't proven anything. His biggest knock after being drafted was that he was a raw route runner and the lockout also hurt his development. Now that he has some experience in the NFL and a full offseason, a lot should be expected of him. He needs to contribute this season.

Clay and Wilson contributed last year and Clay probably will have a much bigger role this sesason.

On paper, with only six total picks the 2011 draft looks to be one of the best overall in awhile.

Now, lets see how this team fares! I personally love having Ireland as our GM. I think he understands that you win in the draft and you add talented players from free agency. People, he missed on PEYTON MANNING! Flynn will never be an ELITE quarterback. We brought in Alex Smith for a look because he already has experience in the type of offense we will be running. Then what? He added David Garrard. I personally think Garrard is a better player than Alex Smith. I think he's a guy who can game manage and can win late in games. He's not a great quarterback but he is a winner. This guy made the crappy jags a middle of the pact team year in and year out. He even won a playoff game! He's smart and accurate, and can throw the deep ball. I love the pick up!

Then, you have his diamond in the rough LES BROWN. People, the writing is on the wall! Miami will be running alot of no huddle 3 tight end sets. They understand the matchup problems that this will bring. With a player like Egnew and Les Brown, miami will be able to create multiple matchup problems, especially with Reggie Bush or Lamar Miller coming out of the back field.

So, if you look at what miami is trying to do and you look at what Jeff Ireland put into place, you can see that we have the right guy behind the scenes. Thats what charley cassely and gil brandt see, and what i see as well.

Unfortunately it is very difficult to evaluate one person in an organisation because he relies so much on those around him. Scouts to help identify the talent, and coaches to develop it spring to mind as the two most important. I truely believe we went after Harbaugh last year because Ireland felt Sparano was useless, and to be fair he is in game management and particularly I feel developing talent. You can draft all the talent in the world but if you have crap coaches developing it then you can forget about it. This year with Philbin and co I do think we have coaches that will actually develop the talent.
With all the above being said I would tend to agree with Brandt and Casserley, I do think Ireland is a good to very good GM, but at the end of the day it is the product on the field that is the ultimate judge, and Ireland is an important cog in producing that.

Upper echelon is such a wonderfully vague compliment. NFL execs are a little backscratching fraternity. When one of them puts a GM in the lower echelon that would be newsworthy.

Ireland will become upper echelon in the media should Ryan Tannehill become elite. I have never bashed Ireland and what I like about him is his shrewedness.

What he has done these past two drafts is way better than anything this franchise has done since Marino. He not only has scored on his draft picks (yeah he missed some too but so does everyone), he has scored on undrafted's like Bess and then signed a guy from canadien league in Wake. It shows he is looking under every rock and his draft is deep.

When you hear a pick now, at least I dont, you dont overreact, you just wonder what is it about this player that the scouts and Ireland like so much? then you read about it and find out why. Jimmy Wilson will be a guy who steps into the limelight IMO. The kid was good with no offseason. Gates is yet to be seen but if he can do some things, thats when you start to see the depth of these last two to three drafts.

And I will remind people, Sparano pounded the table for Columbo and Jerry. Its been said that the GM largely drafts somewhat according to what the HC wants. Philbin will be huge help in how Ireland drafts because we will draft with character in mind.

By saying upper echelon he means top 10? I will give Ireland some credit for drafting guys with great value. The problem I see with him is apart from Jake Long, he has not done a good job finding Pro Bowl caliber players in the draft. He fills holes with average or above average talent. That might be due to his mindset of taking "safe" picks. Perhaps he will reach a point when the team is filled with average and above average players, and we have no glaring holes, he will begin to gamble a little bit for greatness. Shula/Winner used to be that way. Now and then they hit the jackpot.
Upper echelon? Not yet. Middle of the road GM? Makes more sense to me. He needs a few more years to really grade him.

On paper, with only six total picks the 2010 draft looks to be one of the best overall in awhile.

We've just have a different view of that draft. You look at that draft completely separate of everything surrounding it while I consider the whole picture. Pouncey was a decent pick, but ONLY because he created the hole in the first place, which he has a tendency to do. It was also ANOTHER lineman in the first round when we were in need of some playmakers. Thomas hasn't proven anything other than he may have injury problems and may run a little too upright. He's better than Hilliard, but as of now I can't call it a good pick. Still way too early on Gates and certainly not worth the hype, but that was a later pick, where your supposed to draft players with high ceilings, but need a lot of work. I would argue that that was his first good pick of the draft.

One of the best overall? The only reason many of them have a shot at starting is because this was a 7-9, 7-9, 6-10 team. It was a mediocre draft at best. I will say that mediocre is far better than what we had been drafting over the past decade, so that's good. This years draft was FAR more impressive.
