A Billiken

In 1908, Florence Pretz, an art teacher and illustrator in Kansas City, Mo., received a patent for her version of an ancient Asian figure – a chubby character with pixie ears, fat cheeks and an ear-to-ear grin. A year later, the Billiken Company of Chicago adopted the likeness, giving it its eventual name. Initially manufactured as a bank and statuette, the Billiken reached its peak of popularity in 1911, when it was widely recognized as a universal symbol of good fortune.

What is a Gorlok?

The Gorlok is Webster University's school mascot. It is a mythical creature that was designed by Webster staff and students through a school contest. It is reported to have the paws of a speeding cheetah, horns of a fierce buffalo, and the face of a dependable Saint Bernard. The myth of the Gorlok "embodies the highest standards of speed, agility, and stamina in an atmosphere of fairness and good conduct." (Tom Hart, Director of Athletics)
 
Here in Colorado, the town of Lamar's high school team is called the Savages, and the town of Alamosa's high school nickname is the Mad Moose. :lol:
 
Hey, i got my undergrad from Campbell in good old buies creek. Yes we are the camels and they used to say in ball games, "watch out or will spit on ya" ok you had to be there
 
i hear all the Marist College Red Fox cheerleaders look like Aunt Ester. (shudder)

and their favorite cheer goes: "shut, you old fish eyed fools."
