Why is Gosder Cherilus always ranked higher than Sam Baker in the majority of of these prospect ranking websites? I'm just curious if there was some knock on Baker that i was unaware of?

Gosder Cherilus: 6' 7" - 319 lbs

"Started all 37 games at right tackle, but he moved to the left his senior season and had some struggles."

Sam Baker: 6' 5" - 310 lbs

"Great balance, a natural left tackle."

Wouldn't it be better to draft a 4 year starter at a college powerhouse that played left tackle over a guy who played the majority of his college career on the right side?
*Since solid left tackles are harder to find and is what we need so Carey can go back to the right.

LTs are mostly judged by whether or not they have the athleticism to play that position in the NFL. What position they played in college is often due to other factors and not of particular importance to most evaluators.

Cherilus is better suited at RT. So, if Coach Sparano was serious about having Vernon Carey as the LT, then you would have to take Cherilus at that 32nd pick.

Baker is probably not a OLT in the NFL his measurables dont seem to indicate that he can play OLT in the league. The problem with him is that he does'nt really have a fall back position. He is not powerful enough to play OG in most schemes and as a pure RT he would be rated 5-6 in this draft and certainly behind Cherilus. My guess is that Baker ends up with a zone blocking team like Denver and it would not surprise me to seem him drop all the way to the 3rd round. He also has the stigma of Jacob Rogers to overcome. Cherilus should be a beast of a RT.

From what I've read, Baker is not very fluid, he's too mechanical. I don't recall what else I read, and the site I was reading from it now requires an annual subscription so I can't go back and look it up.

I also read he had an unimpressive pro-day. I don't know why.

I completely disagree ... if Baker can anchor the LT position at a top offensive program in the country, he sure can do the same thing in the NFL.

I'd rather have Godser in 1,000 different ways.

Kudos to the OP for succinctly stating the differences between the two. Cherilius is exactly what Parcells wants from a RT, and I can see him being a 2nd rounder for us. But, he's weak at pass pro for a RT and in no way can he play LT in the NFL.

Baker is a very risky pick, injuries, poor pro day and combine, people are iffy on the guy right now. But, looking at his production he's got the ability to play LT in the NFL, so I'm guessing he'll slide a bit but end up being a solid LT. He's not a Parcells type, he's more of a finesse player and his injury record will likely take him off of Parcells' board all together. He's more of a zone blocking LT who gets the job done. He plays faster than he times btw.

Jacob Rodgers and Winston Justice both played OT for the same program, both were thought to be 1st round picks until people starting breaking down tape and testing them. Both ended up as second round picks. Neither is close to what they were hyped up to be. Baker is is finesse player that does not seem to fit the power scheme that MIA wants. Parcells was burned once when he selected Rodgers against the advise of his scouts. You think he should do it again even with Bakers poor work-outs just because he played for USC.

Thats not what i'm saying at all. All i was asking is why Baker was rated higher since i'm not much of an O-Line expert. Just was trying to get some info on the situation.

I still believe we wouldn't be going thru this...."finding a left tackle that is...if we would have just given up our 5th round pick to select Jared Gaither in last year's supplemental draft.....he would have been our LT...and the size the new regime loves 6'9 350 lbs...
I wish we would have pulled the trigger...

Umm, I believe we didnt have a 5th round pick then due to the trade for Green. Although the supplemental draft could have taken place before the we traded for Green but i dont think so.

We very well could have used our 5th in the supplemental draft, forcing KC to wait until next year to get that 5th from us for Green. Apparently Shelton was deemed to be a better option than that.

Spilled milk. We can't undo that. What about this year's crop?
