chess master, world-class eccentric Bobby Fischer dies

Kind of a weird guy especially with his comments. But he was a master chess player.

Great chess mind, but a bigoted, anti-semitic clown...

good riddance.

i don't know, there's few anti-semitic jews left in this world. kinda sad to see him go.

The man was clearly a chess genius, but many geniuses also are just a step away from being lunatics. Besides being anti-semetic he seemed to be a real social recluse and someone who had a hard time fitting in with everyone. I think the way he bashed the USA was the final straw in my admiration for him...he had some big issues.

A true genius in his sport. I learned to play chess because of his success.

Unfortunately, he lost his sanity and his logic becamed whacked.
Also the Government really did him wrong by declaring him a criminal for playing a match in Bosina.:shakeno:

Yeh, but he knew the risks going over. He thought that he was "above" our national laws and was put in his place. He has held a grudge against the U.S. ever since. His sanity wasnt as far gone as you might think, his hatred and bitterness however drove him to be a bitter man. His legacy will forever be tarnished by his anger.

What US laws did Fischer break exactly? I don't remember the details but wasn't it something about playing a Russian overseas?

In 2004, Fischer was arrested at Japan's Narita airport for traveling on a revoked U.S. passport. He was threatened with extradition to the United States to face charges of violating sanctions imposed to punish Slobodan Milosevic, then leader of Yugoslavia, by playing a 1992 rematch against Spassky in the country.
Fischer renounced his U.S. citizenship and spent nine months in custody before the dispute was resolved when Iceland — a chess-mad nation of 300,000 — granted him citizenship.
