The Chicago Bears complete their first trade filling two huge needs: a big-yard TE and a solid #2 WR to complement Muhsin Muhammad and speedsters Mark Bradley and Bernard Berrian. Leaving the team is Michael Haynes who never left the system and Thomas Jones, who will be replaced by Cedric Benson in the starting backfield.

Bears Sign Three Players:

S Adam Archuleta - $1.75M - Archuleta firms up the defense and returns to his rookie coach, Lovie Smith. The hard hitting safety will squeeze sophomore Chris Harris back into a reserve role but adds depth to the secondary and solidifies the cover two but is always a threat to rush the quarterback.

QB Doug Flutie - $250K - The Bears went bargain hunting for this mentor for youngsters Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton. Flutie may retire this season but will be around to help the growth of the QB position as he helped Drew Brees in San Diego.

LB Hunter Hillenmeyer - $250K - The Bears return their only free agent starter from their league leading defense at a steal price of $250K. While the Vandy grad may not be the same caliber as Briggs, he offers solid play at the WLB. Look for the Bears to shore up some more depth and competition at this position.
 
Bears sign DE Edwards

The Chicago Bears today signed DE Kalimba Edwards, formerly of the Detroit Lions. Edwards was the 3rd pick of the 2nd round of the draft 3 years ago and added a pass-rush threat to the Lions defense recording 7 sacks last year. The 26-year old will add insurance to the team who has frequent injury problems with Adewale Ogunleye and can come in on 3rd downs to put pressure on the QB. He fits the Bears mold of defensive linemen that can torment the opposing signal caller.
