What are your thoughts on these two later round NT? It seems like both of these small school boys could have something to offer in spelling Ferguson and possibly being starters in the future. I particulary like Baker in the 5th or 6th as he is the right size (6-2, 326), ran a sub-5.0 40 (freakish for someone his size), currently plays in the 3-4, had 8.5 sacks and had 16.5 TFL last year. I would rather take a flier on him or even draft both of them rather than spending a first day pick on Ron Brace who is good, but produces less in the passing game (18.5 TFL and 5.5 sacks). A lot of have watched a lot more film than I have and have done a lot more research so I want your opinion.

Chris Baker DT(Hampton) 6'2" 326lbs.
Baker began his career at Penn State. He played a reserve role in 2006 and took over the starting role in 2007. His Penn State career never got off the ground because he was arrested twice on felony charges stemming from fights he was involved and subsequently he was dismissed from PSU. He had a fantastic season for Hampton playing DE in thier 3-4. He has the ability to play NT or DE in the 3-4. The kid is really talented and I have read that he is really a good kid that caught up in a bad situation, but it happened twice. Is he going to come and be a headcase like Manny Wright or Demetrius Underwood? Or has he left the baggage behind and is going to reach his potential? That is the million dollar, or should I say the multi-million dollar, question. He is a Boom or Bust type. I think he'll get drafted 4th or 5th round.

I saw that and figured that to be a major reason he was not being considered a 1st day pick. I would be really worried if he were a 1st day pick but in the later rounds, I figure his talent can outweigh his risks but a personal interview would certainly weigh heavy in my decision. Most of us do stupid things in college, hopefully he is past it and can provide us with some great value if we choose him. Personally, I am less concerned with fighting than I am with drugs.

I have a funny feeling that they will be drafted higher than 4th or 5th round. The closer we get to the draft, the more I see their values going up.

After Ron Brace comes off the board, which will be in mid 2nd round, these guys are probably next in line for DTs that have the body type to play a 3-4. And more and more teams are switching to 3-4, so the 3-4 DT will be in high demand on draft day.

If we could grab one of these kids in the 5th round, I would be ecstatic.

Manny Wright, thats what it looks like to me.

Ron Brace had 11 TFL and 3 sacks. Where did you get 18.5 and 5.5????

I'm probably taking Sammie Lee Hill....minus the off-field incidents....Hill put together two back to back very productive seasons at Stillman...almost 3....

Size wise and combine results are just about neck and neck...

Off of Sportsline, but those were 2-year totals. I have been in the hospital with my wife for 3 days so Lord only knows what my brain was thinking. Anyhow, I think that Hill and/or Baker would be much better values in the 4-6 rounds

"In fact, Brace's combined statistics from his two all-conference seasons led to numbers that some of the other highly ranked defensive tackles enjoyed in just one season: 54 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Brace might lack name recognition and explosive burst, but his stout frame, lower-body strength and versatility could make him a mid-round value come draft day."

These two seem impressive, but I would also keep an eye out for Terrence Taylor. I honestly think he will be the pick. Small, but strong and has a lot of talent. Plus, Michigan players always seem to have a niche on Parcells teams.

I'm sure that you have better lateral movement and tackling abilility than Terrence Taylor.

In the NFL, these college defenders that can't move side to side at all, almost always fail.

Demetrius Underwood!!! Wow, I forgot all about that one. You really pulled that one out of nowhere.

I do agree with you. But I think he is worth taking a flier on in the fifth, at least it is a late pick.

Hill from everything that I have read plays DE even at his size. He apparently does not have the willingness to get into the trash that is the biggest part of being a NFL NT. He is kind of soft. The biggest part of being an NFL NT is having the right mental make-up which is the part the Solia has a problem with. Size isnt the only thing that is needed.

I still like Chris Baker somewhere around the 4th or 5th round. Heck, I got into several fights in college although I never got arrested. Guys + Chicks + Alcohol = Fun/Disaster
