Anyone else watching Inside the NFL last night on HBO? Marino or Costas asked what happened to the comparisons between Pennington and Montana and Carter said it's as simple as that - Pennington is vastly overrated. Collinsworth started laughing, but it was a laugh of "I agree 100%", nodding his head. I don't agree or disagree, but I find it interesting that Pennington all the sudden is no longer the glory boy.

Its kind of hard to keep up with those types of comparisons when you can't throw the ball more than 15 yards down field...

Mark my words....if his shoulder doesn't get better soon, big ears will be in the driver's seat before long and Chad's career with the Jets could be in jeopardy. There just isn't much of a market for a QB with a noodle arm.

In my opinion, Pennington was never as good people made him out to be. But at the same time, he's not as bad as people say he is now.

He may be overrated, but he'll be underground when he meets up with #98 ...
either way, look out, lights out, Miami's D has a whole new style.

well hopefully we will make him look overrated this coming sunday. When our front 7 get in his face he will have to put up or shut up.

I never liked Pennington for one simple reason.
He doesnt throw the long ball. He cant throw the long ball.

His passing percentage is so good because its constant dump offs. He is vastly overrated in my books.

Prior to his injury last season, nobody was questioning Pennington's arm-strength, and I don't think his leadership has ever been questioned. If the injury ends his career, that doesn't make Pennington "over-rated" but "unlucky".

As far as the comparison with Montana, I think it's probably apt because neither one had/has a rocket arm even when healthy and Pennington seems to have the same football "smarts" that Montana had. Let's face it, too, if Montana hadn't played so long on those great Niners teams, he probably wouldn't be the icon he is today.

One more point, as a Bills fan who had the misfortune of watching Rob Johnson play for my team, I will tell you that I'd rather have a QB with a noodle arm and a $1,000,000 brain than than a QB with a $1,000,000 arm and a $.10 brain.

Those dump-off's have frustrated us to DEATH the past 5 years. I hope Mr. Saban has a plan. I don't think the prior brilliam regime did.

So you can relate with us re: AJ Feely. :D

expect J.Taylor to INT one of the dumpoffs the Jets do

I have a hard time calling Chad Pennington overrated. Is he Brady, McNabb, Culpepper, Manning.... thats obvious... Does he have the upside of Palmer, Leftwich, Manning 2, or Big Ben... no.... Is he as good or better than just about everyone else yes. If his arm is not messed up he is a great QB with 93.1 rating (53Td, 28Int).. He is also good at playaction and hasn't had the greatest of WR in his career to throw too. Having Curtis Martin has certainly helped along with that beefy O-Line. I have a hard time believing that Bulger, Brees, Green, Hassleback, or Brooks are better QB's then a healthy Pennington...

I always loved Johnson, he was standing there for ages waiting for jason taylor to sack him.And if JT was buys he just waited until somebody else came along.
Nice post.

Some yards per attempt for the Pennington can't throw Long..

(career)

Chad 7.43
Manning 7.58
Brady 6.92
Farve 7.09
McNabb 6.53
Culpepper 7.77

I agree. I think he can develop to be one of the top six or seven QBs in the league. But no where near Montana.

Good point. Chad is in the top quartile. Not even in the same state as Joe Montanna. Chad's never gone beyond the second round of the playoffs! Hackett's offense was the best thing that ever happened to him. He's best at lobbing accurate passes into soft spots within zone coverage. If he's asked to fire it out beyond 15 yards under and kind of duress than his ball is too soft to make it through cleanly to a receiver.
