So I was arguing with a friend to prove something about Miami trading away two good WRs (welker and chambers) there was lots of rumors why can someone tell this guy with me the real reason the both were traded and they were 2 different reasons

a. we weren't going anywhere twith the QB's we had at the time
b. we got very good value in both trades...especially Welker.

And Chambers was overrated. He made ESPN highlights every 4 or 5 games and everyone thought he was Pro Bowl material, when in reality, he dropped a lot of balls and never fought a CB when the CB was gunning for the ball.

chambers--replaced by Ginn, looking to the future..while Chambers is okay, he's not spectacular..has he elevated since being in SD with a gunslinger? No. So we were trying to stock pile picks for the next year.

Cost on Welker, NE gave a price that the phins weren't willing to match. ..period.. other than that he would probably be still on the phins team..

we didn't trade welker, he was a restricted free agent, and the pariots did some shady dealings (shocker) with the language of his contract making it impossible for miami to meet. something along those lines.

^^ yeah they put a poison pill in Welkers contract that would have forced us to pay him a ridiculous amount if we signed him... so instead of just letting him go RFA, we traded him and the Pats threw in a 7th rounder

chambers was just good value, a 2nd round pick for an average WR is a good deal to me...

Which is pretty jacked up if you think about it. It's not like THEY elected to pay him something WE weren't willing to...they put a condition/incentive in their offer (something about the location of the games) that would only be triggered if he played for Miami, causing the potential contract in Miami to be astronomical.

I'm not sure stuff like that should be allowed...it basically means anyone can steal away your RFA's if they want...

EDIT: Yes, I know we got fairly compensated in draft picks...but still, I don't like the nefarious world of contracts, lol

this is correct they did put that poison pill in the contract of welker

I heard that it was a "poision pill" (now not allowed) that was in his contract. Basically when you are a restricted free agent, you get contract offers from other teams that your team can match if they want to keep you (draft picks are also included in the deal if a team signs a player off your roster). Players do this to get the best possible value in their contracts. We wanted to keep Welker, but the Patriots made him a contract offer. In this offer (think fine print) it stated that Welker would get something like a 10 million roster bonus if he played in 4 or more games in Miami. This basically meant that Miami couldn't match the offer from the Patriots because that clause in the contract would mean that we would have to pay him 10 million extra dollars. I don't know the exact numbers, but that is what happened to us I heard.

eh, you guys are conveniently forgetting that Robert Kraft did NOT want the poison pill and actually made them give Miami an extra 7th round pick because his team tried that initially.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the "poison pill" is not why we let Welker go... we thought the 2nd round pick was more valuable.

What? Are you implying we have selective memories that make the Rats seem even more shady than they really are? :buds:

the poison pill was in the contract they tendered to him... we were basically backed into a corner that we couldn't keep him... but supposedly kraft didn't like that, so instead they threw in the 7th and removed the poison pill money from the contract... thats why it looked like he was tendered for a lot more than he was signed, but the fact was it was the money tied into the poison pill that made it look like a bigger contract than he was going to get

but im sure we liked the 2nd round pick also, i mean thats what we tendered him at...

Exactly.

That means Miami could have matched the offer he got from the Pats if they wanted to. They chose not to and take the compensation.

I didn't read everyones replies, but IMO:

1. Chambers was traded because he wasn't producing... 14 straight games without a TD.

2. I think welker was traded for the value of the draft picks.
