Chris Grier Deserves Much Credit, But Probably So Does Asst GM Marvin Allen

How long until one of our assistant GMs gets hired away? If the team, and even more so Tua, has a good year, one or both are gone.

At least we will get more draft picks as compensation and hopefully one or two of their understudies picked up a lot of knowledge to continue the job well.

Of course.
Everything wrong is Grier.
Everything right is not Grier.

We've been through this consistently the last 3 years...

That’s a pretty good brain trust when you throw McKenzie in the mix. They took a lot of high upside players early last year. Hopefully 50% or more pan out.
I don't discount Flo's contribution either. He has scouting insight that most HCs lack.

Just throwing players at a coach, and saying "make it work" is a recipe for disaster.

You can bet Flo has a huge say in player selection. It's not all Grier which is probably a good thing.

I give Grier credit for knowing what he doesn't know, and making hires that do.

He has been a master wheeler dealer, as well as contract savvy.

A GM has more responsibility than just player eval. He seems to be staying in his lane, and leaning on others to mitigate his weak areas.

..with his history of success with KC and as the National Scout in Charge for Buffalo.

Just bringing this up cuz this chess board mastery probably was a collaboration

I often correct people who rag on Grier for bad picks/signings. He is NOT to blame. A little blame, yes. But FLo, Allen, McKenzie, the coaching staff share in the blame. Thus, to be fair, Grier doesn't get all the credit, except for cap. I'm very impressed with what I know of Allen and McKenzie and don't think Miami's recent drafts have been coincidence.

11/12 draft picks played and contributed heavily (different degrees of success) to a team that narrowly missed the playoff in 2020. Seldom do you get 50% contribution, but to get 92% is crazy. Not to mention the UDFA success. I'd say the conglomerate is better than average!

The most underrated aspect of Grier has been, what he's done to the F/O since he's been given full control.

Miami had Tannenbaum, Grier and Gase as a three headed committee that never worked. Miami also had some sort of committee when Philbin was here and that didn't work.

So when Stephen Ross decided to clean house with the exception of Chris Grier, many fans thought that was a huge mistake. What Grier has done in terms of reshaping the F/O has been nothing short of a breath of fresh air.

Stripped of the stench, the egos and misguided spending sprees, the organization has rebounded in such a tremendous way.

The hiring of Flores as coach, Allen and McKenzie in the F/O has helped spearheaded a rebuild of epic proportions. These guys collectively get it. No egos, no drama, just hard nosed football decisions. I'm so happy Ross after many years if stupidity, finally realized the traditional F/O setup was best. Thank heavens for that!!!
