Chris Longs exact position has not yet been determined. As of right now it is looking like a 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE. Most think he is better suited standing up.

I do believe only Chris and Ryan are worth the 1st overall selection, so if we pick Long, I would take a moment to see if he can play the middle.

He has the motor for it. He would be a sideline to sideline guy, and on the MLB blitz, he would be disgusting.

Just a thought, I know he is a little too big for the position, but the motor compensates for it.

Even if he plays OLB, we can move him around a bit to play with the QBs head.

Imagine Taylor and Porter on the ends with Long in the middle. Let Crowder chase the TE.

Huh? You can't just plug the guy in the middle. Let's not get carried away with his linebacking skills just yet. I think maybe he can be a very good 3-4 hybrid linebacker for us, but the MLB position requires an entirely different skill set.

Who says he doesnt have the skills to play it.

Please remember, it would be a situational position to play, not a full time thing. Moving him around like we do Taylor can create a little confusion for QBs.
I do believe he has the talent.

Long is too small to be a 3-4 DE

At 6'3 270, I think he is a little too small to play DE in a 3-4 package and the same goes with Taylor, I do see the Phins experimenting with bothe outside and inside LB but I see him playing opposite of Porter with the Phins trading Taylor for my favorite MLB outside of Thomas, D.J> Williams, he can cover the pass well and can run any RB down, he is all over the field, Broncos are interested in JT bring in D.J.!

I think chris long has already said himself that he can't play 3-4 DE in the nfl.
that's not good.

I have said in a few other threads that I am against drafting a guy #1 overall and than moving him around. My thoughts on that are we need to draft the guy to play one position. If we move him to OLB and DE, and MLB, than we are essentially creating other holes for the team. We have to draft a guy, to play A specific position, to eliminate A specific need.

I like your thought process, but IMO it's just not very practical.

If thats the case we should look in a different direction with the selection.

I see what you mean. It may hinder his development to move him around immediately, but down the road......who knows.

Thanks

i dont know about MLB if we draft him and we still have JT we should stay with the 4-3 then we can Have Chris Long, and JT on the opsite sides of each other have Joey play OLB and have Channing move Inside and possibly try and go after FA lance Briggs i think with that we would be a Solid team and have Rod Wright, and Vonnie Holiday at DT

this would make sense to me. If we stay in a 4-3, drafting long would not make me quite so disappointed. All signs, IMO point to us going to a 3-4 though, and if that's the case to me long just isn't the right fit for us.

JT, and long in a 4-3 would = major pressure on opposing qb's.

of course, nobody knows at this point, what the hell D we are running, just speculating for now.

go phins!!

yea and Vonnie and Rod wright in the Middle can also Rush and Ireland said that we want are team to fit the players and if we got long it would fit our Players joey Porter is the only one that really played in the 3-4 and he is also pretty good in the 4-3 now to but i think it would be awsome to have Chris long and JT rushing the QB Tom Brady would be Hurting the next day after he played us

Theoretically speaking, I guess it's a possibility, but there is a difference between paying him that money and expecting him to make the transition to OLB, and playing him that money and expecting him to make the transition to a sideline to sideline MLB.

I know several scouts think Chris Long could be an All-Pro ILB if he made that transition, but that would be 2-3 years down the road. He is a 3-4 DE who will more than likely become a 3-4 OLB so he's learning a new position as it is. But there is no reason not to think he can't do it. Teddy Bruschi made the transition from a college DE to an ILB, and Chris Long is a much better athlete than Bruschi was coming out of college.

So I guess you are all college scouts and NFL team officials that have watched tape and talked to Chris Long yourself. For all you people that think he can not play this or that and can play only this read this article. I mean unless you guys are better that the professionals who get to do this.

A lot of us have watched tape. Have you watched tape? Or do you feel that highly of the opinion of the steelers Director of football operations?

IS this article supposed to be some kind of guarantee that chris long will play DE.

I am going to have to thumb through the threads over the past couple of days, and find where CHRIS LONG HIMSELF, said he is too small to play 3-4 DE in the NFL>

just for comparisons sake....

the steelers 3-4 DE go like this from a size specific standpoint.

LE
aaron smith.... 6'5" 298lbs
nick eason......6'3" 302lbs

RE
brett keisel..... 6/5" 285lbs
travis kirschke..... 6'3" 298lbs

chris long

6'3" 272lbs.

this isn't college, the OL are much bigger, much stronger and much faster than anything chris long has seen at virginia.
